if she goes to stanford, then her kids will be legacies- what does she think about that?

My kids hate that my wife and I went to Stanford.

Stanford is overrated.

My kids hate that my wife and I went to Stanford.

Stanford is overrated.

any reason for the hating?

Stanford!!

The San Francisco Bay Area is the best place in the world!
(okay, I am biased, I was born and raised here)

^ that's exactly why I want to leave, to live somewhere else.

depends on what she wants...Stanford was my dream school till I did a summer program there and even though I still think it's a great place, I just didn't like the feel of it at all. The campus is beautiful--felt like a huge ranch or mission, and hey there's a mall on campus, but i don't know...there was just too much empty space! UCLA is just so much more happening of a place and the location is perfect. It has a more energetic atmosphere.

Stanford seemed academically intense, while very laid back/casual---so I guess that's a good thing, but still--if I had the choice between the two I would definitely pick UCLA in a second.

but yeah it really depends:
* what does she want to study
* what kind of social experience does she want
* what size does she prefer? smaller vs. huge
* which location does she prefer
* what type of activities does she want to get involved with

any reason for the hating?

.. don't want to be like their parents.

My son chose ucla over stanford four years ago.

unlimitedx: are you my high school senior? she tells me that is exactly why she is leaving too!! what's up with that? she is heading to the east coast. must be a generational thing.

Good Luck to you and I wish you all the best on your journey.

One reason is because I want to live in a new environment, away from home. Half of the excitement about college for me is getting to live in a brand new location =)

if my daughter wasn't sleeping right now on the living room floor just a few steps from me, I would think that you two were the same person! that's exactly what she says! "I want to check out somewhere new" and I couldn't agree more. College is the perfect time to live in a new environment. get a good education and know that your living arrangement (dorms and meal plans) is covered. I read something here on CC that I really liked. being from the bay area, you know we don't have to contend with snow. well someone suggested college is the best time to live where there will be snow because you (the student) don't have to shovel it!!

I still wish she would have picked Stanford because after all I am her mom and it would be nice to know she is close. but that's plain selfish! I know it wouldn't have broadened her horizons as much the big city on the east coast!

Stanford all the way, you will get the best education possible.

you are quite understanding. my parents aren't too quite; I want to leave home and but they use tactics that make me feel very guilty, trying to make me attend a much closer univerity, and i am all unhappy thinking about college now.

and good luck to you and your daughter, have fun. =D

I don't think it makes much sense to immediately say Stanford over UCLA or UCLA over Stanford without knowing more about a person's circumstances or interests. I for instance just chose UCLA over Northwestern, Oberlin, and Johns Hopkins/Peabody Conservatory.

I hate how people dont have the guts to make a decision on their own almost like they need to be nudged this way or that way. Tell your friend its her/his life and that he/she should do what they think is best regardless of outside influence or opinions about either of the two. witht that said go to UCLA.

GO BRUINS!!!

just a comment... i have a friend who chose UCLA (regents) over stanford and he's been quite happy here, although sometimes, ppl bug her about why she passed up stanford and that gives her some minor second thoughts. but neverthless, she feels that she made the right choice. its up to you.
