Is frisbee a semi-big thing at columbia? are there pick-up ultimate games, or a club frisbee or intramural team?

Yes to all of the above.

My sophomore year (03-04) we were one game away from going to Nationals, and we knocked Princeton out of the regionals that they themselves were hosting, beating them on universe point. Not good times - GREAT times.

I think recruiting's been down for the ultimate team for a few years but it waxes and wanes with the commitment level of the captains. the Columbia ultimate team isn't quite on par with Brown and Penn but it's pretty good.

There's pick-up on south lawn in nice weather, or more organized games in central park or riverside park in late afternoons in summer. The ultimate team also operates a Winter League on sundays in february.

Hope that helps.

columbia's a tree-hugging free-loving obama-leaning hippie school. naturally, there are frisbees. i never understood the big fascination behind it, but as denz pointed out, they've got some serious things too (the sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads -- they all adore the frisbee).

something tells me WS has been drinking. before sundown.

i drink your milkshake.

thanks denzera (...and windowshopping, i guess...)

I have no horse in this race, but thought I'd turn up something on google and found this:

i have a family friend who is probably a late 70's early 80's graduate of columbia and claims to have been part of a group of columbia students who invented ultimate frisbee. don't know if its true.

ultimate frisbee was invented in jersey.
