Question: They ask you for the names of the teachers you will be using for your recommendations. Although I already sent out my recommendations to my teachers, not all of them have sent them back, and the ones I have received, my guidance counselor hasn’t chosen which ones to use. I want to send from 1 and 1A out ASAP, but I don’t want to omit this section. What should I do?

Your guidance counselor picks and chooses which of your recs to use? Wow...

Yes -- this complies with some law that protects security and privacy in NYS Education? No idea -- but basically I waived my right to view the recommendation. If I hadn't waived my right, my teachers would have either refused to write a recommendation, or would have written one knowing I would read it (therefore, not being so honest if need-be). In this way, our guidance counselors read our recommendations, decide which ones are the best and then send those out. Knowing this takes a while - what do you think I should write on my forms?

No, you misunderstand, I was saying it was odd to have your recs picked and chosen at all, by you or your counselor...

Oh yeah. I don't know why my school does that. I think it's just to eliminate any chance of bad recommendations - counselors know teachers who write really good ones and teachers who write horrible ones. They don't tell us which teacher writes which one, but they tell us to ask 3 teachers -- they'll pick the top 2 to send to colleges. I think it's a good system and allows some flexibility. What if a teacher was really ****ed off that day writing your recommendation - doesn't matter because you have 2 other really good ones. I guess there's some logic to it.

In the directions it says not to worry if you don't know who you're getting to write them yet. Send the form in anyway and omit the question. I got this info from #39 on the directions info sheet if you want to double check.
