sooo i've been reading a lot about how UCs don't really favor 4 year private institutions, or at least it's not given much priority for admissions (which sucks). but i was just wondering what's the path to transfer from a private school to a UC. i currently go to a really small liberal arts private school in california, and plan to transfer because it doesn't have the particular major that i want to study--asian american studies--even though i also plan to double major in economics.

i guess the question is, should i continue to follow my school's general education requirements and hope those courses transfer over to UC, or should i follow the IGETC, even though it's for JCs?

have you been there a long time and racked up a lot of units? if not, my suggestion is to transfer to a ccc & take the needed classes for the major you want & then apply to the UC from there, you'll save a lot of money, have the major you want and have a better chance for transfer. Some private universities have many classes that do not even transfer.

This is only if you have been there a very short time period because UCs usually have unit caps if you did not receive all of the units at a ccc.

How many units do you have
What school do you want to transfer too
What state are you in
When do you plan on applying
What is your gpa
What grade level are you
What courses have you completed

I need more information to tell you what your options are.

i am currently at whittier college, a small private liberal arts school.
being a freshman, i don't have too many semester units on me yet.
this past fall semester i had a total of 15 units. i'm doing a winter session class, which adds 4 more semester units. and for spring semester, i'm going to do 16 semester units.
i would like to transfer to davis (community and regional development) or irvine (asian american studies--which whittier does not have or provide any classes for).
my gpa is a measly 3.2 right now, but i'm working hard to get it higher.
and i reside in california.

is there a way to avoid the JC route? i have nothing against going to a JC but i know my parents won't allow me to go to a JC either.

but anyhow, i called the admissions office for davis and irvine.
they said that the IGETC is only for JCs to follow, at least those with IGETC certified courses.
and they told me to complete 60 transferable units, 2 english composition courses, 1 math course, and 4 electives--that is probably the most basic route i could take, i guess? irvine also included that summer school taken at a JC is also transferable, and this is usually uniform across the UCs.
