So, I’m thinking of transferring from Emory to Georgia Tech with Chemistry as my major.
My GPA is 3.0/4.0
Will this be hard?
yes
To be more specific, last year they had ~3300 applications. The overall admit rate is about 33%, but: ~50% instate v 17% OOS. Average GPA = 3.7; average STEM GPS = 3.7.
Unlikely, very unlikely, to be accepted as a transfer into Georgia Tech with a 3.0/4.0 GPA.
51% are accepted. You need 30 credits or higher to transfer. Are you sure they accept all your credits?
Most Georgia Tech transfers have almost guaranteed transfer status if they received a conditional offer of admission as a freshman applicant. Strict requirements as to courses which must be completed during one’s freshman year at another school with a minimum GPA (of 3.3 if I recall correctly) in those stipulated courses.
@Knowsstuff : I think the transfer stats are very misleading to those applying without an offer of conditional admission from the prior application cycle.
P.S. It would be helpful if Georgia Tech noted how many transferees were accepted under the conditional admissions program.
Good point @Publisher
Would it be possible with a 3.5/4.0 GPA?
Why do you want to transfer? Specifically why do you want to transfer from a very good university where you are getting B’s to a university that is significantly more difficult and more demanding?
With a 3.0 GPA, it is not going to happen. A 3.5 is more likely, but still a stretch.
I think that you need to do as well as you possibly can where you are. If you can pull off two straight semesters of all A’s, then maybe you might have a chance to apply a year from now to transfer after your sophomore year. If you can pull off nearly all A’s from now through graduation, then your chances for a master’s degree at GT would be better still.
I guess Emory cost more than GT? Especially if OP is in-state.
Yes, it costs A LOT more to attend Emory (unless you get a huge scholarship).
Need based financial aid might be better at Emory.
Emory COA for one year (tuition, fees, room & board) = $70,000
Georgia Tech = $28,000 in-state & $49,000 for non-residents.
