From Private to UC- Opinions and Experiences

I have been reading posts about transferring from a private to a UC, but my situation is a little different.

I am currently a sophomore at a private university in California. I just recently made the official decision to transfer, but I realize I may be a bit too late in doing so. I am looking to transfer to either: UCI UCLA UCR or UCSD. I currently have a 3.7 GPA, and I am in my first semester. I plan on contacting the UC schools to find out if I am missing any requirements to transfer, then plan on taking those missed requirements during my second sophomore semester. I realize it is very difficult to transfer from private to UC, but due to my year, I can’t afford to take a year at a CCC. I was wondering if anyone else had this experience, or has any tips. I’m super stressed and very confused and would just like some more insight.

Realize that at a large public there is not a lot of personal support, and this is going to be your introduction. See the page http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/transfer/advising/transferring-credits/ and jump down to the section at the bottom “For students from other institutions”.

If/when you contact UC campuses I expect you will be told the following.

To determine whether your courses will transfer to UC, you can compare them to similar courses in a UC campus catalog or to a transfer course agreement (TCA) that UC has with any California community college. A formal evaluation of your transcript most likely will not take place until after you have applied. You’ll still need to meet the same minimum admissions requirements as California community college students, and plan to do as much preparation for your major as possible.

Realize that your decision means you may instead find yourself forced to “afford” not being admitted to any UC.
