Is it true that if you do FSSP this year you'll have to stay in San Nic for the entire year? I'm not sure if I want to do it now. My first choice dorm is FT, and I really don't want to be in San Nic for the whole year. Do you think FSSP is still worth it?

No, not true, my roommate did FSSP and we live in Santa Rosa. One of her friends from FSSP lives in Anacapa, another in FT, and another in Manzanita.

Actually, FSSP students will be stuck in san nic all year. It says so in the housing packet they sent in email. I also emailed the FSSP program and my friend who is an RA told me it is true. It is new this year, they’re trying it out.

I feel exactly the same way you do, i really want to go but my first choice is FT and i dont think fssp will be worth living in san nic

It is true, FSSP’s will be in San Nic for the whole year. Confirmed with housing. It’s new this year. Unfortunate, but my D is willing to do FSSP anyway even though she really wanted Anacapa. At least it’s not in San Miguel :/

It seems like no one wants to stay living in San Nic for the entire year. Do you think if we voice our opinions to housing they might change it? I heard that they decided to try it out this year because last year they received complaints from angry students who wanted to stay with their FSSP friends and they all got seperated.

Dang, I probably won’t end up doing FSSP then. I’m definitely planning on talking to Housing about it, maybe asking if they could make staying in San Nic optional? Though if they changed it because of complaints from last year, I doubt they’ll change it back. They might realize they’ll have complaints either way they do it, though.

i wanted to do FSSP so bad! hopefully they make it optional!

I lived in San Nic last year. I loved it. IMO the location I would say is the best out of all of the dorms. It’s right across from DLG, it’s the closest to Ortega (not counting San Miguel), and it also is right next to the ocean. If you REALLY want to do FSSP, don’t let the requirement of living in San Nic for the full school year deter you.

From what I have researched, there seem to be some definite benefits to San Nic. For one, you are guaranteed not to get a triple. From the size of all of the dorms, triple seems to me to have the potential to be very crowded. Also, it is much closer to campus than FT/Santa Catalina. People complain about the food at FT, too and say the food available around San Nic is better. It might also be a pain to go to FSSP and get settled in only to have to move. FSSP seems like a great program, I haven’t found anyone who regretted doing it. Anyone here have a negative experience with it?

My other concern is that FSSP doesn’t match up roommates by personal preferences, it is completely random. So what if I have a roommate who I have nothing in common with, will I be stuck with them for the whole year?

If you absolutely despise your roommate, they allow for a petition for a room (or roommate) change, I believe.

Basically, FT is my first choice because of the parking lot. To my knowledge, San Nic doesn’t have a convenient parking lot?

According to the head of housing, there is adequate parking at the stadium, which is closer to main campus than FT. Also, it is a very walk and bike-friendly campus, you will only need your car for expeditions off campus.

From the FSSP Welcome Letter received yesterday:

Housing:
FSSP students will be living in the San Nicolas Residence Hall during the Summer program. We will remain in San Nicolas for Fall, Winter, and Spring. Those wishing to live elsewhere during the regular year will have the option of moving to another residence hall in week two of fall quarter. Also, those few students who are living off campus in Fall, Winter, Spring of next year and are attending FSSP must call…to arrange for summer housing in San Nicolas. If you have any questions, (especially roommate requests for FSSP), call…or email…

^so we can change it??

The residence hall situation is what’s making or breaking my decision to do FSSP.

But will switching after that week two of the quarter be worse or not worth it?

@myKitsune
Call the FSSP office and ask them your question. After you find out post here? FSSP Office #805-893-2377

@myKitsune: To reiterate…

“Those wishing to live elsewhere during the regular year will have the option of moving to another residence hall in week two of fall quarter.”

Yes. You can switch. I don’t see how it’ll be worse or not worth it. You will have to move your things and meet a new roommate (if you don’t know them prior), but that’s it.
