has anyone been notified of their acceptance status for fssp? i thought i read somewhere that students would be notified on may 1 through e-mail, so apparently i'm wrong. or i was stupid and messed up my e-mail on the application. does anyone know how and when we will receive notice?

Yea, I was just about to ask that. My parents are freaking out that I haven't heard for some reason.

I recieved this email on April 25, I mailed my application on April 22. You might want to try contacting Jesse Bernal, but he hasn't responded to the two emails I've sent him since then, so I don't know what to tell you guys...

Subject: FSSP Acceptance & Information - UCSB

Thank you for your application to the Freshman Summer Start Program. I'm very happy to inform you that you have been admitted into FSSP for Summer 2008! We are looking forward to a fantastic summer, in which you will be able to get a head start on your academic coursework, become acclimated to campus life, and meet 375 other incoming Freshmen joining FSSP this summer.

At this time, I wanted to give you an idea as to what to expect during the next few months. To begin, we have a "Frequently Asked Questions" portion to our website (UCSB Freshman Summer Start) which may help answer any questions you may have about our program and what you need to know for the Summer and Fall.

In the meantime, here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin to prepare for attending FSSP:

Registering for Courses
You will receive a registration packet from within the next couple of weeks. Many students in the past have preferred to access these materials online. So, once they are ready, you will also receive an e-mail letting you know that they are available for you to download from our website, if you prefer. Again, we expect the materials to be ready soon.

This packet will include important information on summer courses and choices, contact information to receive academic advising, and instructions on how to register for your summer courses. This packet will contain a lot of important information, so make sure to set some time aside to read it thoroughly.

Financial Aid
If you intend to apply for financial aid to help with the costs of FSSP, you MUST fill out a 2007-2008 FAFSA. It is important to understand that this is a different FAFSA than the one required for the regular academic year (the 2008-2009 FAFSA). Financial aid is allocated from the beginning of Fall through the end of Summer, so Summer 2008 requires the 2007-2008 FAFSA. You can fill out the 2007-2008 FAFSA online at FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid. We encourage all students intending on applying for financial aid during the summer to apply as soon as possible.

When you complete the 2007-2008 FAFSA you may receive a message stating that your "financial aid eligibility is met only with non-University because your application was submitted to the FAFSA processor after the March 2, 2007 priority deadline." Please disregard this message. Financial
Aid packages for FSSP students will be awarded as if they were submitted on time as long as the 2007-2008 FAFSA is received by June 30, 2008. Many students receive a combination of grants, scholarship, and loan aid for FSSP.

If you have other questions regarding FSSP Financial Aid, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at (805) 893-2432.

Billing
Students will receive a UC Santa Barbara billing statement at their Billing Address with a due date of June 16, 2008. The Billing Office, also known on campus as "BARC", does have the ability to make payment plans or defer payment. If you have inquiries about your bill at any time, you can contact the BARC Office directly at 805-893-3756.

Housing
FSSP students will be living in the San Nicolas Residence Halls during the summer program. Housing for the regular academic year is a separate process and participation in FSSP has no effect on where you will be living in the Fall.

As you might know by now, there will be a week between the end of FSSP and the beginning of Fall quarter. You will be able to leave some of your belongings in your new residence hall during that week, however, you will not be able to stay on campus during that time. Housing and Residential Services will be sending you much more information about move-in day, what to bring, and other information you will need to know for this summer in the coming months.

Orientation Programs
FSSP begins with move-in on the afternoon/evening of Thursday, July 31 and is followed by Summer Orientation on August 1 and 2. Orientation is not mandatory but it is highly recommended for all FSSP students, as FSSP is not a replacement for all the important information you will learn during Orientation. Beginning in mid-May, the 2008 Summer Orientation Booklet will be mailed to all new students who have returned their Statement of Intent to Register. You should sign up for the August 1 - August 2 session that is reserved for FSSP students. You can sign up for an Orientation session by submitting the online Reservation Form that will be available on their website (http://www.sa.ucsb.edu/orientation/freshmanorientation/reserveyourspace.asp) in mid-May.

If for some reason you cannot make the August 1 - August 2 Orientation session, you should contact the Orientation Programs Office at 805-893-3443 to inquire about making alternative arrangements. For students or parents who have already spoken with the Summer Sessions office regarding attending a different Orientation, you will still need to contact the Orientation Programs office directly.

Please Note: Students not participating in the August 1 - August 2 Orientation session will not be allowed to move into San Miguel Residence Hall until Saturday, August 3 at 2pm.

Once again, congratulations on being admitted to the Freshman Summer Start Program! I will be in contact with you via e-mail throughout the Spring and Summer with important information about the program, but if you have any questions at all please feel free to contact me at the information below. I look forward to meeting you this summer!

Take care,

hmm. i sent my application in on april 19. well, it might've been the 20th, but either way it was that weekend.
i sent that jesse guy an e-mail earlier this afternoon. i hope he responds soon, if he responds at all.

I'm a little worried now. 350 spots seems tiny. Then again, who knows how many people like the idea of going to school over summer.

well, if you're going to go to school somewhere for summer, why not santa barbara

Thats exactly why im worried. I want to take part in FSSP and it seems like its popular with a small amount of spots open.

I think your guarenteed in as long as you turn in the papers before the 5/1 deadline... I think.... I havnt heard back from them either.... I sent my studd in in mid April

i heard that they max out at 600, but im not sure on that, i think i heard people saying that at spring insight (i didnt go to the fssp discussion though), im surprised though that no one else has heard...

jesse bernal e-mailed me back today. here's what he said:

We are in the process of inputting all of the application data we have received and notices should be sent out by noon tomorrow.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Jesse

i asked if we would be notified through mail or e-mail, but he didn't say. i hope it's e-mail, that way we'd know sooner.

My guess is that it will be online, I emailed him a question about registration since one of the classes I'm planning on taking is already half full (Math 3B). He said that information will be out tomorrow, so it will probably all be part of a mass email thing to everyone.

For FSSP, can we sign up for classes online somewhere, or do we do it all at orientation?

for fssp, you can either mail in your registration, or do it online, by the looks of it, it doesnt really seem to matter, except id probably lean towards doing it online on GOLD
i got an email from jesse saying they will try to get you in classes that may already be full which seems favorable for paper reg. still

what classes are recommended to take first? I'll be a bio major (probably MCDB), so is it better to take classes that fill up during the fall? math and english?

also, how do we "create a quarter" on the GOLD site? I'm getting this message: We do not have a registration record for you for this quarter. If you are trying to register for Summer courses you have to create the quarter on the Registration Info page.

from the looks of the packet, it needs to be mailed in, but you can email your preferences earlier

hopefully you all got the email now

i didnt get the email... did anyone not get the email as well?

i got the same email today and it said at the top that some of you may have already recieved this

call on monday, they say they are taking apps still until it fills up, so you should be fine
