I have been told that students who singing contemporary songs at the FSU auditions are more likely to be accepted. This seems strange to me. Can anyone shed light on this and on FSU auditions?

I’ll check with my twins who are currently in the program and will PM you. If you’d like, I can put your D in touch with them, just PM if interested.

My kid sang one contemporary and one classic at all auditions, including FSU. They have a fantastic vocal staff and they will likely be looking for quality and potential of the voice. Their musical productions seem geared toward ticket sales to the student body and are contemporary for the most part. Good luck!

I’ll preface this by saying I know things can change year by year, but a couple of years ago when my D auditioned, she didn’t sing a contemporary song but was accepted. So I know it’s possible to be accepted without one. Does it help the chances if it IS a contemporary song? I don’t know. But it was possible to be accepted without singing one when my D auditioned.

FSU performed How to Succeed last fall and Spring Awakening last Spring on the mainstage. This fall is Company and this spring is Spamalot. I would not call Company and How to Succeed contemporary and/or super popular Musicals.

There is no preference for contemporary songs in the audition process. I suppose sometimes it can seem that way because many more students auditioning choose to sing them. The most important factor for us is that the songs chosen reflect range (both vocal and acting) and showcase the applicant’s strengths.
Ticket sales do figure heavily in our season selection, but casting is not really considered when we are looking at applicants for the program. What is considered is potential for a working career in MT after four years of education.
If you have additional questions, I would be happy to talk with you about the program and the audition process.
Best wishes to all!
