FSU Deferred Acceptance - Class of 2019

My daughter received a deferred decision letter from FSU. The deferral stated retake ACT/SAT and resubmit midterm Sr. grades (she is taking 3 AP classes Sr. Yr and now has a 4.2 GPA). Anyone experience anything similar?

Application Stats:

National Honor Society
AP Scholar
GPA 4.07 or higher throughout High School
ACT Composite 28 - Writing 32
SAT 1770
over 300 Volunteer hours
work experience

Yes, i got deferred with a 3.9, 2080, national honor society, 160 volunteer hours, have had a job for three years, club leader, awards in basketball, good essay, etc

my daughter was deferred. what are the chances of getting accepted ?

3.8 FSU GPA, 27 ACT, 6 Aps, 7 honors, 3 varsity sports, 2 clubs…deferred

Does anyone know the chances of getting accepted after being DEFERRED?

My daughter got deferred until March
GPA 4.25
ACT 30
SAT 1770
Community Service Hours
IB Classes all 4 years of High School
National Honor Society
Spanish Honor Society

I heard IB Students hold preference at FSU…does this increase her chances?

I notice that everyone that’s posted here has listed very strong academic profiles, with lots of extra-curriculars and yet there’s still deferrals of decisions being handed down.

The only reason that I can imagine for this is that there’s a D for a semester grade on the transcripts, or a number of Cs. ACTs above 28 or SATs above 2000 certainly aren’t the reason, and neither is a GPA that’s above a 4.0…

FSU is finicky when it comes to these things. It could be something weird- possibly a typo somewhere in the SSAR that said they were taking a class that they weren’t or something really dumb.

Of course, if that’s not the case for you (or your child), I really recommend contacting admissions personally- I’d first recommend phone, and then if they don’t know, do it via email, to see if they can tell you why your child was deferred. It may have been a mistake. It does happen.

It doesn’t seem to make much sense. We know some students with lower grades and test scores who got in. I think the school was flagging any lower grades like C’s and D’s, even in AP courses, and automatically deferring them.

Did the kids that were deferred complete the essay and send a resume? Those are the only reasons I can think of for being deferred. I know kids that got in with C’s…

FSU and most state colleges are weird in that, even if you are a perfect student with high test scores, they won’t accept you without extracurriculars and something you’ve shown a commitment to. I think that’s the reason why I got accepted, despite a couple of C’s.

I got accepted into summer despite having 4 C’s and a D+ ( which I later retook the class and received an A)
It also boggles me how people with lower scores got in, but I believe they really take into consideration the commitment, strength of classes(I took 12 AP’s), and EC’s …

My son also received a deferred decision until March from FSU. Asked that he re-take his SAT & submit first semester Sr grades. We have noticed that every single applicant with almost identical GPA/test scores/ECs that my son has, that selected Summer enrollment vs Fall got in. We chose Fall enrollment, thinking that was the safer choice & that it would automatically default him to Summer if he missed the cut for Fall requirements. Certainly wish somebody would have advised us of this “huge Summer advantage”. I did speak with an FSU advisor on 12/17 & she said the following. Summer students avg scores that got in were: 3.8 FSU GPA, 1720 SATs
And Fall averages were: 3.9 FSU GPA, 1790 SATs. They will tell you their FSU recalculated GPA if you ask. I will say that I was extremely impressed that I even got through live to one of the advisors on admission announcement day. She was extremely forthcoming. My son’s stats were:
3.7 FSU GPA
1640 SAT
NHS
AP Scholar
8 AP classes
Varsity Golf-3 yrs
Clubs
Work 15-20 hrs/week
I would advise EVERYONE in future w/borderline students to select the SUMMER vs FALL enrollment.
She basically said his GPA was good enough but if he retakes the SAT & improves to 1700, then he will more than likely get in. Undoubtedly, his SATs should have been better. He’s retaking on 1/24/15. Praying he has a jump up of 60 points & they DO admit him Summer or Fall. 60 points is a big jump, though.

Yes, Strength of Schedule is a major factor…so a 4.0 with no AP or Honors classes, or college classes, doesn’t mean much to schools like FSU, and they want to see increasingly challenging classes through Senior year schedule. Also a couple of C’s or even a D may not kill your chances, but they need to be early and have been made up for by Junior year - they hate a downward trend. Since FSU Superscores the SAT and ACT, you should take them multiple times…1700 is on the low side, so that needs to come up some…what about taking the ACT? Also note class rank, grade trends, and the level of math taken in Senior year. I know it helped my D get in because she took Calc A-B in junior year and Calc B-C in Senior year, and passed both AP tests. The essay matters, but it’s below the academics for sure unless you can run a 4.2.

“The academic profile of the middle 50% of freshmen accepted in 2014 was: 3.8-4.3 academic GPA; 26-30 ACT composite; 1760-1960 SAT total. In addition to the academic profile, a variety of other factors are also considered in the review process. These include the written essay, the rigor and quality of courses and curriculum, grade trends, class rank, strength of senior schedule in academic subjects, math level in the senior year, and number of years in a sequential world language.”

I go to a public high school in Florida and I am enrolled in the IB program. Typically, FSU will reject or defer no more than 2 or 3 students each year from my program, but this year they deferred 12 (that I know of) from my program, including myself. I had a GPA above a 4.0 and good scores and lots of leadership positions and clubs and such, what I have heard is that they deferred a decent amount of students that they felt may reject their offer to go to UF or some other school, in order to keep their retention rate high. Therefore, they accepted kids WAY above average that they were willing to give scholarship money as incentive to go, and the kids who were just at the average and would not reject their offer and attend another school, lowering their retention rate, differently from how they have in the past.

I just recently got deffered to FSU because i didn’t reach the minimum reqiurments.
My scores: R: 570 W: 470 M:480
I retook the sat and brought my writing and math to a 500. My UW GPA is a 3.3 and my weighted is a 4.3. I do many extra curriculars with a lot of leadership roles and play a varsity sport? What do you think are my chances to get in for summer?

Are you out of state or instate (instate would have a better chance) @leahgol‌

Has anyone gotten accepted or declined yet? I’ve seen in the past that some people got decisions before March 18th?

I haven’t. I check all the time. No patience haha

I check literally 3-4 times a day!

You can stop checking. They contact some deferred students in the days leading up to the decision, but they don’t do it this early. The earliest it usually is is 2-3 days before the March decision date. I’ve never seen any deferred decisions changed this early, and there’s no point in checking every day when you’re still close to 3 weeks from the decision date.

I know…I just check in hopes that there will be something there  , but they haven’t even received my new ACT so I’m pretty sure I won’t get a decision until March 18th.
