I applied for EA and unfortunately, I got deferred. The admissions officer told me it was due to my grades (my GPA was a 3.6W, but I did take a myriad of IB/AP and honors/Pre-IB classes). They told me my test scores were in the range (1750 SAT, 27 ACT) but that it could help a little if I retook them, which I did. My senior 1st semester grades have improved significantly from my junior year grades (I have a 4.1W for the first semester of senior year). Hopefully my test scores also improve.

I was just wondering if anyone knows approximately how many people FSU defers each year because I heard that some schools defer almost everyone besides the obviously unqualified students that get flat out rejected. I am hoping FSU does not defer that many students because then my chance of acceptance would be higher.

Also, what is the percentage of deferred students that get admitted? Thank you!

I don’t think the rate is all that high, unfortunately. A lot of people get deferred,

You mentioned that you were in IB. Did you accumulate multiple semester grades below a C? Or did your grades tend to drop off from 9th to 11th grade?

FSU has in the past tended to absolutely love IB students. Whereas schools like UF typically won’t accept IB students with slightly less spectacular, FSU loves IB students (from what I’ve seen).

Yeah, my grade trend went down. I got a D in sophomore year and a D in junior year. I got mostly C averages my junior year, unfortunately. But my grades have improved significantly this year!

I am also in IB. I was also deferred. I spoke to admissions and was told that I was deferred due to a “D” I got in a pre IB class my sophomore year. I retook the class, replacing the D with a B. They still take the D into consideration. I have a 27 ACT and a recalculated FSU gpa of 3.9. Still got deferred but hope to get accepted with the next decision! Good Luck to you, I hope we both get accepted!

Unfortunately, FSU has been cracking down lately with any grades below a C. Last year multiple people were on here mentioning that they were not just deferred but outright rejected, and assuming that they were telling the truth and not leaving anything else out of their rejection, the only feasible reason was a solitary D on their transcripts.

Unfortunately, if you get a D for a semester grade anymore, being deferred is pretty common, with only a few people getting accepted.

Your best hope is to have an upward trend in grades, and a great profile otherwise.

@Nolesgirl- have you been applied/accepted anywhere else? I have applied to USF & UCF and am still waiting to hear back from them! FSU is my first choice- but it would be a lot less stressful if I had at least one acceptance already! Did you talk to admissions? What did they tell you? They seemed encouraging when I spoke to them, although they did say “I can’t make any promises…”

@Casey101- yeah, I applied and got accepted to both USF and UCF! I got rejected from UF though, but I figured that would happen lol. Yeah FSU is really my first choice, I can’t picture myself going anywhere else… idk. Well the guy just told me I had to worry about my grades more than my test scores. He was like “your scores are in the range” so I guess that’s encouraging.

It’s also because FSU doesn’t care so much about your test scores- you get multiple chances at “fixing” a bad ACT or SAT score. What they care about is your grades in a class where you only really have one shot at doing well.

On the bright side, FSU tends to love IB students (unless that’s changed in the last year or two). You probably have a better shot of getting accepted after being deferred than a student not in IB. :)

Yes they updated her status online. I just happened to check it. They also sent her an email this evening saying that they had rendered a decision.

Originally it said that decisions would come out on March 20th. She sent in Mid Year grades and had new ACT scores sent and shortly after she received a decision.

If you get deferred, FSU could let you know any time that you were either accepted or rejected. The March 20th decision date just applies to the applicants that didn’t submit their application in time for the December decision date. Otherwise, the dates really don’t mean much.

Oh, I’m in-state. So they could let me know at any time, but they will let me know by March 20, correct? My ACT scores came out on Feb. 25th and I requested for them to be sent before I took the test…when would they reach the school? Thank you.
