I have been trying to find out information on the FSU engineering program and there is not a lot of information out there. It appears that their engineering program is subpar to UF and USF. Should this major be avoided at FSU?

I don’t know anything about FSU’s engineering program. But if you want to be an engineer, I would not avoid an engineering major even if the school’s engineering program is not top notch.

The better thing to do if you want to be an engineer is to pick a school based on their engineering program. But if you do that, make sure that you want to be an engineer and can handle the rigor of the curriculum. Because you don’t want to drop out of the engineering program and find yourself at a school whose liberal arts offerings aren’t what you want.

Earning an undergrad degree in engineering does not mean you have to be an engineer as your life’s work. You can work for a few years and then go onto business school and get an MBA, which will set you up nicely for a management position in a tech or industrial company.

As far as I’m concerned, a degree in Engineering is a degree in Engineering…compared to MIT or GT, FSU-FAMU COE might not be as highly regarded, but it is still a solid program nonetheless.

UF is actually one of two FSU-FAMU COE rivals.

If you want to say its “easy” compared to other schools, just take a look at our PRE-Engineering requirements: five classes you must pass with C or better, only ONE re-take. If you can’t get past those requirements, you are not allowed admission into your actual major of choice. Supposedly, that stipulation alone weeds out 60% of the 2000 or so who start Engineering every Fall semester.

The best E school in FL is currently at UF (though it pains me as an FSU alumnus to give this to UF).

The vast majority of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is FSU; some 80% of the faculty and students come from FSU. There have been repeated discussions FSU and FAMU want to split the program; FSU to be more nationally competitive and FAMU to focus on HBCU matters.

It is a rigorous program.

UF - 30

FSU - 102
USF - 119

Sorry, did not mean to indidate that it is “easy”. I am a parent and my son was recently accepted into the FSU honors program. He originally said that he wanted to major in biological sciences and it seems that no matter what major he chooses, FSU would be the best bet and I am partial to FSU. However, there is a strange peer pressure regarding UF and my son is feeling that if he is accepted to UF, he should go there, evem if it costs more money - especiallly since he may consider engineering. He has heard that UF graduates in Engineering are recruited at a high level than other schools in the state. I think that because he is still undecided, he should go to FSU where he will be in honors and take advantage of the scholarship they have offered him. Thoughts anyone?

FSU any day over UF unless engineering is his goal. Then UF has the advantage. The peer pressure aspect is worthless in the real world.

I would not recommend UCF as they have a terrible faculty-student ratio.

My son has a similar situation now, four years later, and maybe there is new information out there. My son was accepted both to UCF and FSU and he wants to major in Mechanical Engineering. He knows that UCF is ranked higher for engineering but he loves FSU.

We have read a bunch of threads here and many people claim that UCF engineering students have a much higher chance for internships and job opportunities due to their central proximity in the state and NASA being close by. Is this really true? He would love to talk to an FSU engineering student or recent grad to get a true feel for the engineering program. He realizes that the engineering school at FSU is not on the main campus and that seems to be another item to consider.
