FSU or FIU

Ok so I recently got accepted into FSU and now I'm faced with the decision between going to FSU or staying in Miami and going to FIU. My major for both schools would be computer science. Does anyone have any information on the computer science department at either school to help me in making my decision. Thank you!

Personally, I’d much rather go to FSU but I’d much rather live in Miami. That’s actually a tough choice… Sorry, I don’t really have anything to contribute related to CS. Good luck in making your decision.

If you have to ask this question I suggest you stay in Miami and attend FIU. Clearly the academic advantages of Florida State compared to FIU aren’t as important to you as being in Miami.

Good luck.

I grew up in Miami and graduated from FIU a long time ago. I never left home for college, a decision I regret to this day. Leave home and see another part of the state. Miami is great and you can always go back, but there is so much more out there. Not that Tallahasee is a big city, but it’s certainly is very different from South Florida. Good Luck!

I’d personally go to FSU on an academic basis. Also, FIU has a very large commuter base, not to say that FSU doesn’t, but it certainly isn’t as pronounced. Its a new experience while still being affordable and relatively close to home, and in most programs (barring hospitality management), FSU is the stronger school academically.

I’m not making this decision because the academic advantages aren’t important to me. My mom is trying to convince me to stay and I’m trying to convince her that I want to go. I’m just not really sure which school has a better computer science department. My sister goes to FIU and her friend told her the computer science department there isn’t that good, and I’m not sure about FSU. My question is if there is an academic benefit by choosing FSU over FIU.

Sure. FSU is a [better academic university](Rankings | Florida State University) url=http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-top-public</a> and [one of the two flagship universities in Florida](http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-08-30-tuition-survey_x.htm). FSU is also the [#4 ranked national public university by Princeton Review and USA Today.](http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/REVU/0x0x343502/19fbd497-2eba-4255-bdbd-067bfb8a16e1/REVU_News_2010_1_12_General.pdf) The #17 ranked national public university by Kiplinger and so forth.

You’d have a traditional residential university experience (as opposed to a commuter experience), better faculty, facilities, student body, campus, history, you name it. You’ll also work your tail off.

For example: [Andy Wang of Computer Science wins NSF CAREER Award / Top stories / News and Events / Arts and Sciences / FSU - College of Arts and Sciences](http://artsandsciences.fsu.edu/News-and-Events/Top-stories/Andy-Wang-of-Computer-Science-wins-NSF-CAREER-Award)

FSU is clearly the better school, that’s a given… IMO though, Miami is much better than Tallahassee. I think that’s sort of where the debate comes in. FIU really isn’t in a good location within Miami, so personally I’d choose FSU.
