First of all, I do realize that this has been discussed over and over again.

I will be transferring for a computer science BS at either FSU or UF.
I have a 3.75 GPA and my in-major is 4.00. I'm not sure if this gets me accepted at any of these two schools.

Anyway, I have decided to apply for FSU only. I have been on their campus this month. The students are friendly, the staff is helpful, and the girls look amazing. Even though I'm determined to go to this school, the people I know strongly suggest UF. Their arguments vary from "you'll actually get a job with a UF degree" to "they made Gatorade".
I do realize that UF stands better in the rankings, but I don't see it as an obvious choice merely because of stats.
Should I really consider going there just because it is supposedly more prestigious?

I also want to experience the college life and going to FSU sounds more appealing to me. I've seen the girls and I've heard about the parties. I even like their "warchant". I feel like I already belong there. If I am deluded and I am not realizing my potential mistake of missing out on UF, please let me know. I would like to hear opinions and maybe some relevant arguments.

lol…sure…no grads from FSU get jobs. the school manages to stay in existance even tho their grads are all sitting on their parents’ couches and living in their basements.

Seriously? do people really think/believe that FSU grads dont’ get jobs?

UF is 39th nationally according to US News, while FSU is currently ranked 79 (Grad School).

Feel free to go to FSU, the prestige of UF will not matter as much in the CS field (which is hot right now). If you where going into Engineering (like computer engineering), I would say go to UF, as the difference in engineering schools is significant.

By the way, I heard UF is also know for the occasional party or two…but that may just be a rumor.

Someone considering FSU for engineering should consider FAMU, since it is the same engineering education at a lower cost and easier to get merit scholarships.

So is there a good reason why I should reconsider UF?
The thing is… My application to FSU is already complete. I had to go through a lot of steps, including taking a native language proefficiency test, for which I actually had to drive to Tallahassee. For some reason, I’d hate to repeat the process.

I have started a list of personal “pros”.
FSU: already applied, easier to get into (I have a 3.75 GPA), closer to my current location (3 hours drive from my parents house as opposed to 5 hours to UF), I have experienced friendly staff, already familiar with the campus, beautiful girls (however, I haven’t been to the UF campus yet)

UF: my degree would supposedly be more prestigious and get me a better job; and my major is ranked better at their school.

I really can’t believe parent2noles hasn’t shown up in this post…yet ;)

Look, you’ve already decided that you prefer FSU to UF and since CS is a hot field right now, it shouldn’t make much difference where your degree is from. You are convinced that you will love FSU, so go there.

For those who care about rankings, of course UF is ranked way higher and it’s always possible that someday you will apply for a job and the person doing the hiring will be a rabid Gator, but it’s also possible that person will be someone who just hates UF. Of course, you haven’t even visited Gainesville or apparently investigated Florida’s CS program but if you don’t want to be bothered with finding out anything about the place why post on here about it?

theconnoisseur, you are 17 and you live in Texas and you’ve never even visited either school. What makes you so opinionated on this subject?

And btw, there’s plenty of arrogance from the FSU boosters who for some reason never miss a chance to disdain UF to match any perceived arrogance from any Gators you may encounter. That’s how it works when there’s an in-state rivalry.

^ I do want to know more about it. That is the whole purpose of the topic. I don’t know much about universities. I have only moved to this country 2 years ago. I understand the rivalry, but I just don’t get people who state that one of the two is “miles better” than the other without being able to express a single valid argument.

I know very little about the two schools (my father is an alum of UF though) nor do i know anything about CS beyond the intro level so obviously I can’t compare the two programs. However, assuming CS is anything like more pure sciences, a program could be miles better than another if it has a particular research focus that the other school lacks and the applicant is interested in doing research or working in that area. It could also be miles better if the program emphasizes practical over theoretical skills and the OP is interested in directly entering the job market with as much real world experience as possible. For those interested in research, a theoretical focus may be better.

If UF seems to have a CS focus that interests you more than FSU, apply there. If they’re the same or if FSU seems to have a program that would better fit your academic/ professional goals, go to Tallahassee.

By the way, both schools’ CS grads are getting jobs. To say they’re not borders on ridiculous, although it is possible that one school’s CS department brings more companies to recruit its grads than the others.

OK vexobeats, I have no personal experience in a computer science major but in about 5 minutes on the websites of the 2 schools I discovered that UF offers a computer science degree in 2 different colleges: the college of engineering and the college of liberal arts and sciences. FSU’s only computer science program is in the college of arts and sciences. Right away, I would assume that you have a broader set of options in computer science at UF, rankings aside. You have said nothing about any specific focus you have beyond wanting to major in CS so I’m not sure what information you are seeking on this thread.

This is your education; not anyone else’s and while this site is a good place to seek help and advice concerning college, it’s not really appropriate to expect other people to research schools on your behalf. You can find out a huge amount by just reading the information on each schools websites. Just from my cursory look at each school, I can see why a UF degree in CS would be more rigorous and more desirable simply because it’s based in the college of engineering.

Perhaps of interest to the OP is that as part of a 6-university consortium (Stanford, UIUC, Utah, Texas A&M, Notre Dame) UF just opened a 150 teraflop supercomputer center…one of the fastest in the country and the fastest in the state.
