FSU vs. USF for undergrad (physics major)?

It's been a long time since I have been in school, so I'm starting out at a local community college for my AA. I am, however, taking as many honors courses as possible as I want to try to get into the best grad school I can down the road. I also plan to transfer schools after my AA so I get my bachelor's degree from a more credible university.

Once my AA is finished, I plan to transfer to either FSU or USF for my bachelors. From the research I've done, FSU is preferable for physics majors, but I'm not sure if this will really make a huge difference for my undergrad or not? Ideally, I'd love to go to Caltech for grad school, but I want to make sure to do all I can at this point to have the best chances at that happening. USF is much closer to me and wouldn't require a move, whereas FSU would. However, if FSU would increase my chances at getting into Caltech down the road, I would be willing to move to make that happen. Also, if having FSU/Caltech on my degrees would look better than USF/Caltech, that is also something I want to consider for my career down the road.

At this point, I really just don't know how much of an impact where you get your bachelor's degree really makes if you plan to have a PhD. If anyone who has any experience on these matters could help me out here, I'd really appreciate it.

Florida State has an excellent physics department and has the only national lab in Florida. It can make a substantial difference as an undergraduate and this is something you certainly should investigate.

Here’s a notable example:

Great to know, thanks. Looks like I am going to have to plan out moving to the area around FSU.
