Undergrad USF vs FSU?

Which is better?

IMO, when someone first says they are going to FSU you think they got rejected by UF. But USF sounds much more prestigious and they are amazing in research/ medical field etc.

Which is better for undergrad(I plan on transferring with 60 semester hours by summer next year or the years end. So it'll only be like a year to year and half unless I decide to stay.) How are the students at USF vs the students at FSU, and how is the campus/ dorms. I feel like FSU will have much better and cozier housing.

Do you really need to ask?

“IMO, when someone first says they are going to FSU you think they got rejected by UF. But USF sounds much more prestigious and they are amazing in research/ medical field etc.”

I hope you aren’t going to base your college decision on this superficial concern.

You didn’t indicate your major, which should be a major factor in your decision. If you are majoring in something where USF has a well-established, significantly higher-ranked program, then go to USF. Otherwise, I think you’re better off at FSU. It is the overall better school.

Like SweetheartCroc said, you didn’t mention your major or academic plans. Both Universities have something to offer and in some ways will fit certain students needs and not fit anothers.

What the? In case you didn’t know, people have been rejected by FSU and accepted by UF…just check in one of these threads. It’s there somewhere.

Or, in some cases, people never even applied to UF because even God’s gift to the state of Florida doesn’t have every major some people want… (I think there’s some sarcasm thrown in there somewhere).

About the only thing USf is more prestigious than FSU in is the medical areas. And even then that’s just because that’s seemingly the only thing USF’s known for.

I’m not even applying to UF. Put in my FSU (Psychology) and USF (Public Health) applications. I have no desire to got to the University of Florida. The majority of UF students I’ve met didn’t impress me and their fans don’t impress me. I would take USF over UF any day.

I plan on doing premed. But As I said I only plan on staying at FSU or USF for one year then transferring to UF after 60 credits(already have some AP included + summer classes), or transferring to UM after 30 credits(by next semester,…only if scholarship is awarded).

How are the classes at FSU vs USF for the premed program? Also, how is the party life, and the ease of involvement etc?

Btw I know FSU is ranked much higher than USF overall, but I was curious about the STUDENT BODY and SOCIAL LIFE, not really about the academics, because I plan to work hard wherever I go.

You can plan all you want, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to go that way. You need to pick a school that, if you aren’t accepted as a transfer to UF, you would be okay staying at for the duration.

Honestly, if you’re going to go somewhere and spend your entire time there looking forward to leaving, I doubt you’re going to enjoy either place. In that case, you might be better off going to a community college near where you live and transferring than going somewhere for a year or so and then transferring out.

Undergrad doesn’t really matter if you’re set on medical school. You can go to whichever Uni you want to and just maintain a high GPA, then try to score high on your MCAT’s.
Medical school’s mostly focus on GPA and MCAT scores.
Check out this thread in the pre-med topics section on this forum:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/1283821-how-much-does-undergrad-school-matter-medical-school.html

On the pre-med note, the only time college would matter is typically when it comes to your pre-req’s. Most medical schools look more favorably on upper-level science/pre-req’s that are taken at a 4 year college instead of CC/JC. I’m pre-med as well and the only pre-req’s I’m taking at my CC are my english courses and Bio 1.

LOL @ USF being more prestigious than FSU…

Student life: If you want to go to UF that bad, you probably wont have a fun time at FSU. The student body tends to be rather fit physically and we aren’t all that arrogant. We also tend to eat animals that are packaged at supermarkets, not found on the side of the road.

Lol ^

And I don’t plan on going to any college with a complete mindset that I will be transferring. I will silently do all the courses and separate that from my social life. I won’t tell anyone a single word that I plan on transferring etc, because I might stay, forgot to mention that. I will stay If I like it and If I get over UF, which I don’t think I will. And I wanted to go to UF because I feel it would be a better route to getting admission into med school. A med school would most likely prefer a 3.7GPA student at UF than a 3.7GPA student at FSU. And @Pasbal If I want to I can transfer, I was always good academically I was just an anomaly rejection for UF. All my stats were much higher than the middle 50% and I had 10 total APs, and 2120 etc.

For med school they focus a lot on GPA I know. So will it hurt me If some of the 60 credits needed to transfer are taken at a CC over the summer, and some are AP credits? Because technically If I get the 60 creds by next summer end then I will be a junior at UF… Is there any way I can transfer in as junior. but still stay there for three years to take “extra” higher level classes to make my transcript look good when applying for med school + extra time to study for MCAT?

A 3.7 at UF or FSU would not make a difference to med schools. Now if you had a 3.7 at any of The Ivies vs UF or FSU than yeah THAT would make a difference.
They just want to see high GPA’s and MCAT scores. If you need to convince yourself that it will make a huge difference to attend UF go ahead it’s your life, but if you don’t get into UF it’s not the end of the world…just keep that in mind.

When you transfer you can stay and take whatever courses you need. They like to keep you on track for graduating on time, but if you stay a little longer to take extra courses I don’t think they can stop you.

I also want to add that USF has better research oppurtunities than FSU. USF is well respected when it comes to medical research and is known outside of FL. I would say USF and UF would be the best options for pre-med and having better oppurtunities in the field.

I completely disagree with this - referring to undergraduate opportunities. On the graduate level, most med students are working so hard just to pass med school they don’t do a lot of additional research except very short items. My D1 is a 3rd year med student now and an FSU biochemistry grad. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa (which is impossible at USF, UCF, etc) and PBK makes a difference when applying to med school, probably much more than where you went, as PBK itself is commentary on the quality of the undergrad school. Only about 10% of all universities have qualified to host a PBK chapter. We should note USF has [failed about seven times](http://www.tampabay.com/news/education/college/usf-falls-short-again-in-bid-for-phi-beta-kappa-chapter/1110840) so far in applying for a chapter of PBK:

D1 also performed her research at the Mag Lab - the only national lab in Florida, also hosted at Florida State. USF has a nice med school, but I doubt undergrads do much research in it. They’d have to compete with all the med students, the residents, the researchers and other grad students for research opportunities.

FSU receives more NSF funding than any other school but UF. I’m almost positive that UF’s funding goes mostly toward engineering too.

“And I wanted to go to UF because I feel it would be a better route to getting admission into med school. A med school would most likely prefer a 3.7GPA student at UF than a 3.7GPA student at FSU.”

Not really. The only time institutional GPA comparison really comes into play is if you go to a school notorious for difficulty or GPA padding. Also, as I mentioned before, some schools frown on upper-level and pre-req’s taken at CC’s. Your best bet is to figure out which schools you want to shoot for and do research on their requirements, use a site like mdapplicants.com to scope it out. I’m personally looking at FSU, USF, UCF, University of South Alabama, and LECOM-Bradenton (Osteopathic school, their PBL teaching appeals to me). I sort of tailor my academic career to their basic requirements.

“For med school they focus a lot on GPA I know.”
Indeed, I would dare say most allopathic schools look at things in the following order:

  1. GPA/MCAT.
    2)Physician shadowing/extracurriculars/research.
  2. Personal statement.
  3. Your mojo during an interview.

FSU has received more total NSF monies than ANY university in Florida, including UF.

I disagree with you guys on the fact that USF isn’t big on research. They’re second in the state in research grants.
