Fu Engineering

I am considering applying to clumbia fu engineering ED. How is their program? I have heard that it is less popular. Also, which major is most popular? I am thinking of majoring in biomedical enginnering but I have heard it is extremely competitive. Thank you in advance.

Columbia Engineering has in it some pretty smart kids, but you're right in saying that it's not very popular (though many would argue that it's getting there). This is attributed to how small the engineering school is and how much historical pride and emphasis Columbia invests in the College. It gets made fun of every now and then: very poorly and douche-baggishly by a few random students in CC, and quite hilariously by the Columbia Varsity Show (watch it every year if you decide to come here). However, none of these factors actually reflect on the quality of the program, which can potentially be very good.

BME is a tough and competitive major no matter where you go to college, according to some of my friends in the engineering school. IEOR (Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, aka business engineering) is one of the more popular fields in SEAS, but it's famously seen as a cop-out major.

thanks for your reply

I'm not in SEAS, but I'm doing Econ/Operations Research in the college. Here's my view on IEOR.

OR (Operations Research) = Acceptable. Required classes include applied integer programming and other math, probability, and statistics heavy courses

IE (Industrial Engineering) = ******** or Acceptable depending on the path you want to take

EMS (Engineering Management Systems or Emergency Major Systems) = ********. Courses include managerial behavior and a crapload of management and non-tech electives
