@preamble1776 I appreciate your comments on both posts. You’ve confirmed my thoughts. Thank you for your responses!
@MotherOfDragons Your perspective is valuable. Good luck to both you and your children on completing your degrees. Thank you for your response!
since you are young, $200K is kind of an abstract concept to you. you don’t really have a solid grasp on how much money that really is and how long it will take to pay it off. we do. go to UHM and do great things.
@8bagels Believe me when I say that there have been many tears shed over the past few weeks. It’s not a decision that I take lightly, and I’ve seriously considered many options. It was difficult enough to narrow my choices down to UHM and SCU. Whatever I do decide will be informed and practical. I’m not a narrow-minded or entitled person. Thanks for your reply!
These semesters are easy to coordinate: you’re done with her Ed’s and have some entrance to major classes so you can have a first internship in your choice of us city. Then you know you can go anywhere at your choice at any point semesters 4,5,6,7. Semester 8 you need to be on campus to prepare your launch into the professional world.
@Zinhead Hawaii is definitely less glamorous for someone who’s spent their entire life here. Where I’ll be staying in Hawaii is not a vacation spot, just want to clarify. I do agree with the $200k savings though. Thanks for your responses!
UHM – save $$$
@Wien2NC I want to assure you that I am aware of the cost, hence this post. Most of what’s being said is confirming my thoughts. Thanks for your reply!
@GreenEggsandSpam There are so many things that go into a college experience. My vote is UHM. Save yourself and your mom money. Also, you will have more financial freedom while in and after college. This can mean a study abroad, summer internships away from home perhaps, etc. 200K is a massive amount and that does not even include travel costs, etc. Be practical. Would you advise a friend to spend 200k more on one school over another for the reasons you have listed? Probably not.

I’m sorry for your angst! You can accomplish what ever you wish to with perseverance and hard work. I wish you the best!
@GreenEggsandSpam she is doing great. She is a junior at GA tech. She has not regretted taking the economical choice. I think the the thing is to really go for it no matter the school. Don’t be shy about asking for help. Look for opportunities , ask for advice. College is just 4 years. It doesn’t mean you are giving up on your Silicon Valley dream. Won’t it be nice if you decide you want to work there -to be able to go debt free or almost debt free?
She has friends that intern all over the country
Good luck with your decision.
I took the economical choice as well (a full ride at a small college nearby my hometown instead of a more prestigious university that I would’ve had to pay for). Have never looked back, and work in a tech firm.
College is really what you make of it. My sister commuted to college and had a grand time - made lots of friends, had fun, did internships and enjoyed her experience. Living on campus isn’t what makes college college; it’s the experience of being with thousands of other young people your age exploring and growing together.
UHM has an international exchange program and has a focus on developing business in the Asia-Pacific region.
