Full ride vs. private but cheap?

Hello all, I've narrowed down my college choices to two colleges. Babson College and Temple University.

First, and most importantly is the financing. My dad promised to me that he will help me graduate college completely debt free.

Temple is giving me 25k a year which will cover full tuition and room and board. This is from being a President's scholar and from Fafsa. In total it will cost me 4k a year for estimated personal expenses. I'm also accepted into the Fox School of Business Honors College and the general college. I'll also have three 4k cash stipends.
-I guess I'm getting paid to go to Temple and everything is handed on a silver platter.

Babson is giving me a lot of money through their own financial aid and the net cost will including estimated personal expenses will be 16k a year. No academic scholarship or special awards.
-16k/year is still cheap and I am not paying for the majority of it.

Winner in this category: TEMPLE, but I will not be paying anyway and 16k/year is still affordable.

However, I have large concerns over Temple. I'll be majoring in business and most likely finance. My chief goal, however, is to be an entrepreneur. This is where Babson seems to win hands down. Babson is ranked #1 for entrepreneurship for 16 years straight and is consistently in the top 20-30 overall business schools. Fox School of Business is not even in the top 50.

BUT, Temple Honors program could change everything... I'd also likely be one of the better students in my graduating class and be more distinguished in comparison to my peers. Apparently being accepted into Fox Honors means I'm I will be the top 4% of my class.
I still think I can be within the top 20% of my Babson class, but I don't think I will be as distinguished as in Temple.

Babson has better job placement on average, but I don't plan on being an average student in either school.

Does anyone have any experience in Babson or Temple?
Any input would be nice.

oh, and Temple wins hands down for social life. Babson work load is notorious+it is a tiny school…

How about Temple plus a decent used car (one year of savings) or start up money toward your own business (4 years of savings)? Ask your dad how he’d use the 16k x 4 = 64k. Maybe it is chump change for him. Maybe it’s an amount that he’s willing to scrape together for a beloved child. Maybe he’s got ideas for other ways that the two of you could use that money. Talk it over with him. See what he thinks.

Babson is a terrific school for what it offers. But you seem to prefer Temple because it is larger and offers a greater variety of possibilities. Nothing wrong with that.

Go with Temple. Generally, A full ride can only be compared with another full ride.

The amount of money my dad spends is not dependent on a fixed figure. If I go to Temple I most likely WILL NOT receive that extra money that I have saved him.

Well for me, the fact that Temple has opened many doors for me is a major +1 in its favor.

Just a note, my dad will help me graduate debt free (pay for most of college) because he realizes how crippling debt can be. HE IS NOT RICH. That’s why Babson is only 16k/year cause the amount of money they gave was based on need.

These schools have such different environments. I’d give Babson an edge educationally but it sounds like you prefer Temple socially and it is much better financially. If you can, I suggest you visit both schools again for accepted students day and then go to the place where you feel is the best fit (including $ in the equation) – don’t discount “gut feeling” in this process. In the end, you will be most successful at the school you are happy and comfortable at.

It sounds like Temple wants to invest in you, and in doing so, will ensure that you receive a top notch education as well as viable opportunities. It’s difficult to turn down a full ride, but try to visit each one again, and determine where you feel you have the best fit. If you want to be an entrepreneur, you have the ability to make things happen for you. Good luck!

-------------Resolved?--------------Almost, I just need to send my IRS and get a definite number on my financial aid

My father spoke to a finance professor who is also his long childhood friend. It ended up being a fortuitous time that they got in contact again. My father asked what college he would recommend for someone interested in entrepreneurship and the professor said Babson without any hesitation. My dad did not tell him which colleges I got accepted into, but nonetheless he said Babson-he did not first say Wharton, Ross, Sloan…

He seemed to regard Babson highly and thought that it was the obvious choice. He also said that Babson has world renowned professors. Some of the professors are from Harvard, others are already rich entrepreneurs themselves. Since he is an unbias professor in finance (he teaches in Scotland but is native to Singapore), his opinion means quite a lot.

Unless Babson ends up giving me less money than their estimate (still have to send IRS data retrival), I’ll most likely go to Babson.

Thanks for the opinions though, and if it were not for this professor, I would probably be choosing Temple.

Are you saying professors are Temple are drop outs ? Choose a college wisely(take everything into consideration, not just professors) otherwise you might end up transferring out.

What? Nowhere did I say that.

The professor my father talked to simply said that the educational quality at Babson is top of the line-many of the professors are world renowned, many are even rich entrepreneurs and many of them are from Harvard. He knows many uni professors and thought that Temple was mediocore but Babson was stellar. That’s all.

No one said anything bad about Temple.

Considering the graduation rate at Babson is 90% and Temple is 66%(?), it seems like transfering out would be more likely at Temple.

Anyway, my key goals for college are: 1) Learn as much as possible
2) Be able to get a solid job position senior year
3) Lift weights and get even more swole
4) Have fun
Babson probably lacks in number 4. But that’s okay.

Get out of Philly and go to Babson! You’ll learn what it takes to succeed in this world at Babson. At Temple, you’ll just cruise by in your usual slacker ways. Your father is right on this one.

There really is a reason for this.

Let your father have the privilege of paying to send you to the best option for the future that you want. HE’s earned it.

Seriously, I’m happy that I can afford to pay for my kids’ college. I’ve earned that privilege too. I wouldn’t want them to compromise.
