So I've been admitted to LSA and LSA Honors (dunno if that helps for LSA scholarships), and I've been skimming the LSA scholarship site. All I can find are 20k/year scholarships, and Shipman which pays 15k/year and room and board. My question is...are there even full rides/full tuition scholarships for OOS LSA students? If so, then could you tell me what they're called and when recipients of them are generally notified? Thanks in advance!

congrats on your acceptance!

sorry i wasn’t able to answer your question, lol.

If you get the 15k/yr shipman, LSA automatically give you 10k if you are in state and 20k if you are out of state. The 35k/yr in tuition + the room & board scholarship from shipman effectively amounts to a full-ride OOS.

Shipman interview nominations go out in… February I believe. And LSA scholarship notifications should be coming out in the next few weeks.

Hopefully this helps!

Oh…I didn’t know that LSA gave you any $ on top of Shipman (do they do that for any other scholarships?). Just wondering, Tyler, did you get Shipman or what (I know that you got a near full-ride OOS for UMich, but I have no idea what scholarship you got)?

Tyler, are you sure about the extra 10k for instate for Shipman? The 15k plus room and board covers is already a full ride for in state. What would the additional 10k go toward?

There’s no automatic extra 10k with LSA in-state Shipman. Some in-staters might be eligible for the 10k “geographic distribution” scholarship, though there’s some question as to whether they cancel that one if you’re awarded a Shipman. Shipman doesn’t, however, preclude you from getting other, smaller scholarships (such as Regents or departmental scholarships).

As for interview invitations, I’m quite sure they haven’t finalized the selections, so there’s no cause for despair if you haven’t received one. The event is set for the last weekend in March, as usual.

Just called the LSA scholarship # and ya, shipman finalists or w/e are notified through snail mail in early Feb.

He’s right in a way. It’s not 25K + room and board, it’s 10+15K, and that’s used to pay tuition, room and board. If any of that money is left, it’s received in cash form.

Although, I don’t know that it’s 10+15. For me it’s 20+5. However, I’m in CoE, so I wonder if LSA is different.

idk if this is a stupid question or not, but did you have to apply for a scholarship once you got into lsa or are all those accepted eligible?

Tyler’s in Shipman, OOS. He knows what he’s talking about. (BTW dude we have a mutual friend in real life…)

For Shipman and many other scholarships, you’re considered as long as you’re accepted by a certain date (This is relevant, for example, for School of Music applicants; since their auditions happen relatively late, students need to have an early audition date and be accepted early in order to be considered for Shipman). There are some scholarships which you have to apply for. You can check on this listing: [University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid: OFA Scholarship Listing](http://www.finaid.umich.edu/Types_of_Financial_Aid/Scholarships/ships.asp)

Tyler09, tetrahedr0n (assuming it’s the same tetrahedr0n as on AoPS), and I all have Shipman. I was only speaking from my experience; I don’t have an extra 10k (hence I said it wasn’t automatic). It’s hard to tell what the standard really is, or if there is one, since we don’t really talk about it that much (one of the nice things about Shipman is that if you choose to come here, nobody worries - or necessarily knows - who has the larger and smaller scholarships. Especially if you live in the Shipman hall in South Quad, you’ll become part of a nice community.) The different colleges make different decisions about whether/how much extra to offer. I wouldn’t be surprised if some people negotiated for more (especially OOS). The room and board does come to just under 10k, so adding that to 15 would give you 10+15k, but there’s no automatic 10k beyond that.

Do those who receive Shipman usually have incredibly high stats (4.0 UW GPA with 14 AP’s (valedic), 2400 SAT I, 3 800 SAT II’s),or is there usually something special about them besides statistics (assume, of course, that the statistics of all those considered would be good enough to get admitted to the University of Michigan), or is it a mix of both?

They only consider 1500 out of the 9000…crap.

If you aren’t in the top 1500 it is unrealistic to think about Merit at UMich.

The problem is not necessarily that I’m not in the top 1500…my problem is as to how they derive who is the top 1500. I mean, I’ve been admitted to LSA honors, which, supposedly, comprises the top 10% of the incoming LSA class and, given the fact that I was a reasonably early admit for LSA honors, I would think that I would be in the top 900, at the very least. However, if they just use GPA cutoffs to determine the top 1500, then I might be out of luck.

Oh, I see what you mean. No one really knows how they do the choices, but I doubt that any of it is solely based on GPA. They are looking for those who shine in one way or another.

This is true. Someone from my school got it with quite an average GPA, but he was incredibly talented in a certain field.
