Full time internship advice.

Hi all.

I have a second interview for an internship Wednesday. They are looking for someone to start in January, and it requires 30-40 hours a week. For anyone who is wondering, it is in Supply Chain.

If I were to get offered this internship, should I take the semester off and do it? Or should I try and take classes as well? Basically, my university has a internship for credit program in which I can have an internship, and it counts as a class. I really need some sort of experience, but I also don’t want to take a semester off because I really need to finish school. What should I do?

Questions:

  1. When do you plan to graduate?
  2. What kind of ‘internship’ is it? Will you be earning real skills that can translate into a job?
  3. Does this company hire interns to full-time work after graduation?
  4. Is this internship paid? If it is not, then I suggest working with whatever department would apply the credit from the internship to ensure that it is not going to be a waste of time or illegal.
  5. Can you arrange your schedule to take 3 classes this semester? Taking 3 classes will help you retain full-time student status and will allow you to make up the 1-2 that you miss out on between now and graduation time (i.e. either take a summer course or a heavier load one or two semesters)
  6. Do you want this job or do you want a job? Answer carefully. If you do wind up delaying your graduation, even for a semester, that means you are, for practical purposes, pushing back the start of your career by a year, since you would be going through recruitment the fall of your super-senior year.
