Fun question

So, do you guys think your ethnicity matters when applying to colleges?

If you look at UC stat finders, most schools accept the same percentage per group (around 28-35%).

I think it would only play a role if you were also first generation/low income and talked about it in your essays. They technically aren’t allowed to put more weight on an app based on race.

If only I was a Catholic Inuit that was molested by a priest and displaced by the Exxon Valdez spill, I’d be a shoe-in ;-)

If your native american you have a giganto advantage.

Underrepresented minority(not including Asian) and you have an advantage.

If we’re talking about the UCs specifically (since this is in the UC Transfer subforum), then no, not officially. Affirmative Action is banned in California.

surely me being black, while it at times may seem like a curse will be a blessing, seriously. for those who associate with black people how many of them speak of UC and dental school aspirations with a worthy GPA and extra’s?

^I’'m black and every black person I know is extremely motivated, as am I.

uc admissions readers wont see the ethnicity you listed on the app, however, if it’s mentioned in your personal statement I think it will be considered because admissions readers are subjective. as an underrepresented minority (urm), you may have a better shot at getting in since admit rates of urm students declined over the past years, and university money is going towards outreach programs to increase the number of minority/low income/first generation students in higher education.

i personally think ethnicity matters and should be considered. the uc is owned by the people of california, however, if you look at the statistics year after year, it doesnt accurately and equally represent the people of this diverse state. i’m filipino and while filipinos are the largest asian group in the state, we only make up 2% at uc berkeley.

sureee buddy, sureee.

and what CCC do you even go to? and how many of these black people are so motivated? i find it highly doubtful.

@mypinkfriday, your screen name is after a Nicki Minaj album. How motivated are you?

^awww come on, very motivated with mid 50 units completed with a 3.3 GPA, currently working on science prereqs at CCC to fulfill those of UOP dental school after i transfer from Davis, TAG’d.

don’t hate on nicki, she’s actually an entertainer that is positive.

@samyrahlee - the last thing that makes sense is going after someone because of their username. looking at my username, you might think im some crystal meth addicted, AIDs ridden loser who needs a do over - but thats not the case at all.
i just like the way redo please sounds when i say it.

and minaj is a close third in my book to beyonce and britney :D

The CCC, I go to isn’t important. I have a higher GPA than you do. I am in several outreach programs and that is where I have met many motivated URM. Maybe you should stop thinking so highly of yourself and realize there are other people in the world who want to defy the odds and complete their goals too.

awwww my redoplease, always stayin dopeeee :D

the ODDS aren’t that high. seriously eduation isn’t usually one of the top 3, for that most maybe even 5 that you would connect “black” people to*.

eff is this “thinking higher than myself” i am just proud to be a 22 year old black male, despite listening to rap music and smoking herbal, i am on the voyage to be of the top rich 2% of the US, doing LEGAL operations.

*what i mean is when you think of black people you think, basketball players, football players, music video girls, rappers, etc, not so much “lawyers, dentists, doctors, engineers, etc” NOT saying there arent any, just not that wide a percentage like other minorities.

Do the readers know the last names of applicants? I can not prove it but suspect that if it is something like Tanaka, Kim, Wong or Nguyen you are going to need to have particularly strong credentials for admission to the most selective schools.

^Nope you’re just a number.

I hope you aren’t being serious. If you are, then you are the clubhouse leader for the “Most Asinine Post” award on College Confidential in 2011.
