I am looking at this article right now (see link below). I live in Cali right now and have my heart set on Clemson. I didn't want to go to school here because all the UC's have furlough days and it seems like a waste of time and a stupid way to save money. Cramming more material in less time hurts the student especially on the quarter like all UC's except berkley are on. Is Clemson worth the 24k dollars when I'll probably only be getting 20k worth of instruction? I have yet to visit, I hope my opinion toward Clemson only gets stronger after my visit. My parents are not paying a dime for school, if I stay in state or not.

The furloughs they did last year were not allowed to be during instructional time – it was 5 days from December to June, and a lot of people, I heard, took furloughs every day from 8-815 (or so) to equal 5 work days. Most faculty, rightly, pointed out that university instruction and research is no factory work, so even if they are “furloughed” during any of these times, they likely would not stop reading, researching, prepping for class, grading papers, etc. It was more about saving 5 days of pay per person than stopping work.

But, sadly, that seems to be the reality all over, not just for colleges.

Clemson already has unpaid furlough days, but they haven’t interfered with any classes I’ve had. The teachers are encouraged to take days off that they don’t have classes, office hours, etc. Therefore, as a student it isn’t noticeable.

Let us know when you’re visiting, and I’m sure there are some activities/events you can attend while here.

I haven’t had any of my classes disrupted because of furloughs

okay well in California they are just canceling class all together. One of my friends that is going to UCLA has 3 meetings cancelled. Sorry for misunderstanding or seeing pessimistic or anything, just a big worry of mine. Luckily, the JC im at right now has just had to do small things to save the money, like closing libraries earlier and raising the temp of the class rooms and so on and so forth. Luckily, ill be out of a JC before things get even worse here. They cut classes by 30% and raised enrollment by 30%. It’s a joke to say the least.

I’ve heard things are terrible in California. It’s bad here in South Carolina but definitely no protests over college funding…yet

oh there have been some good ones. UCSC had a good one on march 3rd i believe. They will continue to get worse. Raising tuition by 33% isn’t cool. However, UC’s are some of the top schools in the nation and students seem to not see that their money should make them a ton later, especially at Irvine, San Diego, LA, and Berkley.
