Furman Class of 2025

I think Duke will still have interviews. They will announce finalists early Feb.

The reason I was curious is because I keep reading so many people on here and other sites that have said that their child received a Townes Scholarship…perhaps they do offer around 40 knowing that many fewer will actually accept.

242 of enrolled freshmen students without financial need got scholarships in 2019 according to their common data set. That does not include athletic scholarships. I think there’s about 650 kids per grade so that’s a pretty large percent. Average scholarship was around $17k. So, all of the scholarships we’ve been talking about are definitely on the higher side of their merit.

Does anyone have any insight into the male/female imbalance? The school is almost 2/3 women.

Fiske Guide To Colleges 2020 edition:

“Every year, Furman awards hundreds of scholarships averaging $18,600, plus 189 athletic scholarships in 20 sports.”

Another source states that the average Furman University scholarship award is $30,625. (I do not remember the source, but it comes up when one does a google search.)

When I look at their CDS, it seems athletic scholarships might be full rides so maybe they are included in your second number above.

I would definitely use the CDS as the source for understanding scholarships and average amounts. The athletic numbers ($12m+ in H1) include full and partial scholarships, and those should be lower this year as Furman eliminated their baseball and M lacrosse teams.

and wow 189 athletic scholarships out of a class of 650? 189 athletic scholarships plus 242 scholarships to kids with no need adds up to 431 kids getting merit. I definitely think Furman is the type of school where they need to give merit to get the best students. Not sure how well they “meet need” for families who need it. I have a feeling they lose kids there. On last year’s thread, quite a few families said their student’s merit was not enough for them to afford Furman and no other FA came in.

Either the FIske sentence is worded poorly, or they are wrong on the athletic scholarships because there are only 438 unduplicated athletes at Furman per the equity in sports data, so no way there are 189 athletic scholarships each year. Equity in Athletics

So I think they give out a lot of these scholarships. Someone on ZeeMee just said she knows four kids just in her high school who got the Hollingsworth. Lol.

Hi all! Does anyone know if Furman’s Financial Aid offer is in addition to the Towne’s Scholarship? We just received notification of my daughter’s package. Fingers crossed!

It should be. I haven’t seen Furman’s financial award notification so I don’t know how it is presented, but I saw one from another school for a family member. It showed a merit scholarship, a small grant, work study, and federal loan options to total up to the complete financial package.

Everything is broken out if you scroll through the offer. My daughter also received a Bell Tower Scholarship and a small Federal loan…

Yes, my son’s financial aid offer was comprehensive–Bell Tower plus small loan if you drill down into it.

just re read everything and noticed she also received a small grant.

I was too naive…the total included both the Townes and an unsubsidized loan…but we are so grateful for the Townes!

My son is considering a PWO opportunity for Furman and has been accepted early action. Can someone explain how he can pursue any time of scholarship opportunities to help reduce the cost. Great school, great opportunity for him, but really expensive.

We just received an email to check the financial aid portal as it’s been updated. Didn’t get anything on top of the merit scholarship.

same…

Same here. We’re grateful for what she has been offered, but it’s still a stretch, especially since we have another daughter who will be in her 3rd year of a 5 year program.

We can’t seem to get into the FA portal. I’m guessing it’s because we didn’t file fafsa because we know we won’t get need based aid. Still, we can see our packages at other schools that just show merit. I can call them today.

Has anyone heard about that full tuition merit scholarship they give? I thought they send out invites for that in early Feb.
