Furman Must See's

My D an I are making our second trip to Furman. We have seen the typical: dorm room, University Center, DH and the outside of several buildings. We will be seeing the Townes Science Center as we have an appointment with a Chem professor. What are the must see's that are not on the tour that made your child attend Furman? I know it is not just the physical but the academic and social that might make a school stand out, but if your making a long special trip you want to see everything.

7 years ago when we first visited FU, the library was under renovation and Townes hadbt been started yet. The thing that drew us was that it looked very safe and the campus was beautiful. We thought if there’s that much attention to detail on the physical plant the school must be first class. And it is so.

But if you want to see things;

Townes building will blow you away
see the Southern Country homes complex
see the Budhist temple
take a look at the Rose Garden next to the student center
Walk by the 9-11 memorial
The library is a must see
The physical activities center renovation is near completion
Go see the Belk Tennis Complex
Go and see the Golf course
Check out the upper classmen dorm rooms
there is an apt complex just outside the sports gate that Furman owns with a pool. Some seniors get to live there senior year
Take walk on the walking trail around the lake
Check out the alumni house by the track
Check out the chapel
Take a look at the sand volleyball court by the Studnet center

That should keep you busy. More than anything else just take a nice relaxed walk around campus and try to get the feel of the place

You may want to visit downtown Greenville, too, including Falls Park and the Reedy River waterfall, the Peace Center and the West End, including the new downtown ball park. Many, many parents of OOS students tell me how much they enjoy visiting Greenville. The Furman campus is north of town, about 20 minutes but Furman just opened a downtown preformance/art space across from the park, for teenagers. Nearly year round, you’ll find free concerts, Shakespeare in the Park, art festivals and lots and lots of people walking the downtown at night.

While this is not directly related to Furman, it will give you an idea of the City of Greenville and social, economic and cultural offerings of the area, which can be important for internship opportunities (and for just plain enjoyment.) You may even want to stay downtown.

I agree that you will want to visit downtown Greenville. As OOS parents, we do enjoy spending time downtown, and I know our freshman daughter goes there a lot on weekend nights.

I agree with ernchrurl. Try out downtown in the evening for dinner if you can. Our daughter also spends a lot of time downtown. In fact, she often grabs a friend and heads to a coffee house to study over the weekend, or they go picnic at Reedy Falls. Take your daughter to Spill the Beans - the ice cream shop by Reedy Falls. Also, my daughter has enjoyed the activities center. She pays a small monthly fee and attends classes. She’s doesn’t like working out alone, so she loves the structured classes. Check it out if you’re interested. Oh, make sure you at least drive by North Village Apartments where most upperclassmen live, and also the Vinings, like George said. North Village gave my daughter something to look forward to, knowing that she’d go into a regular dorm for at least her freshman year. If you are there a little longer, consider looking around the mountains if you don’t have them at home. My daughter has really loved hiking on Saturday mornings, to our amazement. She and a few friends just decide they are going to go and they head out. They pick up a to-go lunch from the DH to take with them, which makes it very convenient (and cheap!). OK, I forgot that Sat. mornings at Furman aren’t really mornings, since the campus seems to sleep until noon! Oh yeah, the chapel is gorgeous. Check to see if any movies, plays, concerts, etc., are going on while you are there. Some are quite impressive.
