where is the place to get cheap futons near Chapel Hill?

Target!!!!!!!

Target's always good. And I think they have cute futon covers, too.

eh. every futon from target i know of has lasted one year before it falls completely apart. I bought the most expensive on they had and the bottom had fallen out completely before one year was up. Come to think of it, all metal futons seem to fail quick. but them wooden ones are pricey...because they're real futons.

i got mine from ikea. it was cheap but has definitely held up pretty well. if there's a store nearby or you're willing to have it shipped, it would be worth checking out theirs.

Yep. Ikea. I had a futon from target and it was so uncomfortable, then my roommate brought one from Ikea and it was not only comfy but pretty.

The nearest Ikea from C.H. is in Virginia, right?

^Apparently, an Ikea is opening in charlotte sometime next year.

Looks like I'll be getting an uncomfortable futon from Target...

Theres' a mattress and bedding store in the plaza where WalMart, Best Buy and Barnes and Noble are located on 15/501 that sells futons. They had several models to choose from and also sell futon covers (which are great because you can remove and wash them when they get nasty) and pillows etc.

We bought the step up model for my son ( he and roommate initially split the cost then he bought it from him after sophomore year) and he used it for four years and gave the frame to a friend when he moved back a few weeks ago. It was comfortable and very durable. Don't go for a cheap futon cause as everyone says, they'll last a year and in the long run, you'll spend more when you end up replacing it.

well for me I live in the north east so i would have to store the futon over the summer and don't feel like dropping more then 150 dollars or so on one. Does the store have any cheap models?

I bought the $99 one from Walmart. I'm not expecting it to be great but that's what my mom and dad were willing to buy so it sounded ok to me. haha.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but does everyone bring a futon? Why? Is this in order to have a place for visitors to sleep, and also functions as a sofa in the room? You would only have one per room, right?

Some have a futon, plenty don't. One per room -- it's a shared thing. It's nice, but not necessary.

Everyone definitely does not bring a futon. I wish there was an Ikea in Cary! Grrr...

a comfy bowl chair is nice! we picked up a futon at a garage sale on move in weekend then sold it at the end of the year a twin sheet makes a good cover for it....I will say the sad thing is the amount of stuff thrown out at teh end of the year....ending up in the landfills....so think before you bring it. Each dorm has lounges and many have them on each floor. you can live wiht out a futon especially if you plan on dumping it. Same thing with carpeting. a bath mat or smaller rug will suffice rather than a whole room carpet that goes into the trash bin. We all need to be better about that....be kind to their landfills in chapel hill....
Also, take your trash home dont' dump it in chapel hill.

Just an FYI,

I just got back from depositing D in her dorm, and we went to this store to check out their futons. We were told they no longer carry futons, but that they had in the past.

Sorry for the bad information; we did our shopping there a few years back.

The move-in addition of the Daily Tar Heel usually has lots of ads for area merchants with back-to-school specials. There were several places that sold futons that usually advertised there as well.

I just did a Google search and found this:the Better Sleep Store

I just read several reviews and all were very positive about the place.

eaDad,

It was no problem. We needed to go out to that part of town anyway; it was just one of many stops. I just wanted to put it out there so that no one made a special trip.

My D decided she didn't have enough room for a futon and the storage tables she wanted to put under there with it.

Anyone got a good tip on a comfy chair that could fit under a lofted bed?

Just back from Carolina and saw this post. I did see loads of futons moving in and my son and his roommate are the only ones in their suite that do not have one. The Target one is on sale this week - regular price $159 on sale for $99. Walmart's is $99. Some stores such as these have a place of consumers to review the products they bought and in the past these items did not fare well. A bowl-like chair - that I have bought at Target - broke in less than a year as well. However, they are less money than a futon.
