Could someone give an overview of how the social life / parties are for a freshman? What are the parties like? How prevalent is drinking in these parties?

Also, how does roommate pairing work?

Also, how does roommate pairing work?"

I have already answered the party question in several different threads, so if you could please go back and check those, you’ll receive your answer :)

Roommate pairing has not been addressed yet though, I believe. You will answer five or six basic questions such as “Do you normally go to bed after midnight?” “Do you smoke?” “Do you drink?” “Would you tolerate a roommate who smokes/drinks?” “Are you neat or messy?” etc. Then they pair you with someone.

It’s actually a pretty good system. I only know a handful of people who have switched roommates.

Just to be clear, you can’t pick your roommate?

I don’t recall picking your roommate being an option - or picking your dorm, for that matter. Just the simple on-line questionnaire previously described. The new student website will be up in May and will have a whole section on housing. You get an e-mail in July giving you your roommate’s name and e-mail address and your dorm assignment.

“Just to be clear, you can’t pick your roommate?”

Wake does not allow you to pick your roommate or your residence hall. There is a period of time when you can switch your roommate (I think it’s the second? week of school) and I think you can also switch at the end of first semester. After your freshman year you can pick your residence hall (first come, first serve basis) and your roommate(s). Housing is actually this week for us (April 13, 14, and 15).
