GA tech BME

Hello community,

I was accepted into GA tech and plan on majoring in BME with a pre-med track. The 3.0 average GPA for engineering students is quite daunting with regards to applying for medical school. Is it possible to maintain around a 3.8 in the BME dept without breaking your neck or having no social life?

I was also accepted to Umich and UVA but I am in the financial aid dead zone so I am assessing the other options. Is UVA or UMich worth the extra 10k over GA Tech? Is GA tech worth the extra 15k over instate UConn Honors program?

Thanks!

You will have a very difficult time finding an engineering program with an average GPA significantly above 3.0. Liberal arts schools tend to give higher GPA’s, but not engineering programs.

As far as cost, everyone values money differently, so that is a question that only you can answer.

They probably are not for BME. I actually agree with Banjo here. You’re actually lucky if you attend a school w/an engineering program average GPA of 3.0, many are still in the high 2s. Also, even if you were a natural science major, the average GPA wouldn’t be terribly higher (in fact often natural sciences are lower b/c upperlevels are often still designed like the intros. There aren’t things like projects that can be graded as leniently as in some core engineering courses, only exams) rather at Tech or another school (even if private). Also, I hear UMich is quite tough, so I really don’t know how you’d be escaping hard work going there or any public school w/science programs. If you like UConn(especially the honors program), then head there if it’ll cost you less. Just don’t expect not to work very hard as a pre-med science major unless you are particularly talented (I know some people who are).

If you are definitely going to med school, you should weigh UConn and GT. While UConn is significantly cheaper, GT will give you a way better engineering degree. Given that you plan to go to med school, determine which college will give you the best education without throwing you in a financial hole. If that means paying 15K more for GT, a GT education is definitely worth it.

Trying to decide between GT, Vandy, UVA (Rodman Scholar) for BME. Opinions? Out of state for all.

I would go for GT. The BME ranking is 3! Only Johns Hopkins and Duke higher.

GT BME also has this amazing partnership with Emory’s med school. Definitely GT for BME.
