Ga Tech Hopefuls

3.53 Tech Weighted. I pretty much did my rough draft for my essay and I’m at 3,500 characters. I’ll be revising a ton from now till September 31st so hopefully having 1,500 characters to work with gives me some flexibility.

Sounds good. Sounds like you and I are in the same sort of boat. I’m going to do a first draft hopefully tomorrow night. Which topic did you pick - 1 or 2? I am leaning towards #2.

I did #1 but I think my essay kinda sucks right now lol. I’m really rusty thanks to Summer, but oh well, I still have some time to hopefully get back in the groove. Man, Senior Year is gonna suck. I NEED to get all A’s with probably the toughest course load I’ve ever had and I need to start working on Essays for other Colleges as well. I’m also applying to Emory and UGA, but I’m applying regular for Emory so I guess I have some time. Not to mention I need to study for the October SAT too lol. And I need to get a job…

But oh well, I can’t really complain too much as I’m sure we all have a lot of stuff coming up. 2nd semester of Senior Yr should be better tho :)

I’m OOS so no UGA/Emory for me but I obviously have some others that I still have to apply for. I’m laying it all out for 4 A’s and 1 B core classes, 1st semester Senior Year. 4 of the 5 cores are math/science so I think it’s do-able haha.

gthopeful, I’m letting you know that Emory regular decision is tough. Don’t let the freshmen profile stats. fool you (them being comparable to Tech except the 75th percentile being higher and the 25th lower), almost 40% were admitted through early decision. With that said, understand that most clearly apply regular, and that there are but so many spots left after both rounds of ED. Normally a lot of people that are a little squeamish about their chances (but really want to attend), apply ED. Those who have other prospects (normally Ivies/top LACs) apply regular. These applicants are top notch and will likely be admitted into one of our peers or an Ivy. It will be intense. And don’t be discouraged by your senior schedule. I worked throughout most of high school (nearly fulltime including senior year) and had a tough courseload like you, and I did well in the courses and on the AP exams. And I had done solidly on the SAT already (took second one in October like you, most scores shot up, I did really well). You can do it. Just try to get a 2100+ on the SAT and that will give a good chance for us and Tech. Make sure you do well on writing for Emory though. There is quite a gap between Tech and Emory in terms of the 75th percentile of the Composite Score (2160-2200 vs. our 2250) because of the writing section. We tend to do better here. Also, we care about demonstrated interest, especially for RD applicants. So, if things don’t go as planned with Tech and you still apply here, ask them for a video or something. They want to know that you are seriously considering us.

Emory charges the same amount for out of state as in state SLightManifesto, it’s private. If you got a reasonable financial aid package (unless the finaid office slips up, the packages are normally pretty solid here), the amount you pay will probably be similar to Tech. And the education is just as solid unless you want to be an engineer. I would give it a shot if you are considering natural sciences.

Well I want to be an engineer, so that’s where you kind of lose any chances of an application to Emory. And I know Emory is private…I have many private schools on my list, I just am OOS so I don’t as heavily invest interest in all the Georgia schools whereas someone from Georgia may look to many of the Georgia schools first.

Fair enough. Don’t apply to too many though. App. fees start stacking up. Have you considered Berkeley or USC? I met a guy who is BME at USC (was in my calc. 2 class here this summer), says it’s somewhat tough (natural science courses are about the same as they are at Emory with some being a little easier), but USC has a fun atmosphere also. Vandy also has a fun atmosphere, but I don’t know how comprehensive their engineering program is. I’d imagine it is pretty good for a school its size.

Sorry, Berkeley is public, but it does have an awesome undergrad. engineering program.

I mean, Emory is a school that I definitely want to go to, but its not currently my top choice. I would apply Early, but the whole binding thing keeps me from it. But yeah, with some hardwork, Senior Year shouldnt be too bad. I’m also trying to up my Sat from a 2040 to somewhere in the mid 2100’s. Hopefully I can do it. Anyways, thanks for all the info!

Haven’t considered Berkeley or USC but I know that they both have great engineering programs, even moreso Berkeley but I don’t really want to go to California for school.

I have looked at Vandy. It definitely has high standards academically, but it’s not a highly touted engineering program in terms of those stupid US News rankings and I may apply but it’s certainly a reach with my stats. My ACT is about 50% but I’m Top 14%. It appears that only 86% are Top 10% though so maybe I have a slight chance, plus it seems they take a lot of kids from private schools so maybe that ups my chances a bit more. Here’s how I probably group my schools:

Reach: Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, UIUC [both GT/UIUC are in between a reach/match]
Match: Purdue, Bucknell, RPI, Northeastern
Safety: UConn, WPI, RIT (probably will drop WPI and RIT from the running though)

Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern are really solid Though for engineering, I would go to Carnegie Mellon. But Northwestern is an amazing school overall. I don’t know how well Cornell does in rankings, but if you are giving NU an application, then you might as well consider it. I’m sure they have a large array of opportunities for you.

Well GT is my first choice. I visited both CMU and GT and while I did like CMU, I just felt it couldn’t compare to how much I loved GT. I haven’t visited Northwestern, Vandy, UIUC, Northeastern, or Purdue but if I get waitlisted/denied from GT on the final cut in March, I’d probably head over to Indiana and Illinois for a visit to UIUC + Purdue (+ potentially Northwestern if I got in there).

You should visit Northwestern anyway lol. It’s very nice. I prefer the way that Duke, Princeton, and Notre Dame do their gothic architecture more, but Northwestern is beautiful nonetheless, especially in the fall. Have fun and good luck.

I’m applying early. Best of luck, everyone :)

I am becoming increasingly nervous knowing that the application is going to be available in a few days! I have already began to draft my essays as well, to se which one will turn out better.

I’m applying early too!
Wish me luck :D

Doubt i’ll get in (OOS)

Applying Early Decision OOS (its my first choice)
3.95 UW and 2300

Also applying to Rice, Clemson, GW, USC (California), Maryland

Good Luck Everyone!

I just submitted my application, guys.
Good luck to the rest of you :)
