Hey everyone.
So I applied EA to georgia tech and I am anxiously waiting my decision.
I applied as a math major, and I am a white female. I was just wondering what the female to male ratio is at ga tech, and if it is a super crazy ratio as a math major? I am just nervous that I will be the only girl and that I will make no friends and I will feel isolated or experience any negative comments about my gender in the math department. I know these are probably irrational fears, but I just wanted to know what people thought.
Also will my chances of getting admitted maybe increase because I am a female pursuing math??
Look at Part B1 of GT’s Common Data Set; you can figure out the male/female ratio.
Part C7 of the Common Data Set does not expressly state that gender is considered or nor considered in admissions decisions.
Friends come from in many cases nonacademic activities. Your major has little to do with it. No one honestly will care what you are majoring in. i attended college initially as a math major and no one cared many years ago. Being a female was a nonissue.
I guess it depends on you. If you chose math, you will work with mostly men, especially if you get a PhD in mathematics and become a mathematician. . So, its a good idea to get used to that right now, and you will get used to this in your upper level math classes at GaTech. If you head towards finance and business plenty of women in those fields though, so you have options with a math major. Your freshman math classes will have plenty of women, as computer science, and engineering majors take at least a year or more of mathematics. Big data is another area to consider with a math major and thats more gender balanced than the PhD route. I think Ga Tech is now 40% girls in the undergrad class as a whole, but way less than that for PhD programs, and less than that for a math undergrad major as well. There are sororities to join and you will find plenty of friends, of both genders.
Thanks for the responses and input I appreciate it
