I have been admitted to GA Tech, UIUC, but still havent recieved the admission decision from UMich. However I am pretty sure I will be admitted, so I need to make a decision as soon as possible so I dont spend too much time on this. My major on all of them is Chemical Engineering. I know that the three of them are excellent universities, and that is why I am having a hard time on making a decision. The factors that I consider the most are (on a descending order): quality of education (specifially on my major), prestige, chances of getting into a graduate university (like MIT), campus/facilities, sorrounding city. I would appreciate any other useful comments, opinions and pros/cons to help me decide. Thanks.

PD: I am an international applicant. Cost is not an important factor. I have also been admitted to UC San Diego, should I also consider this university, or are my other options clearly superior?

U of Wisconsin is ranked higher for chemical engineering than any of the four schools he mentioned. But it’s probably too late for that now. I don’t know how that would factor into admissions for going to MIT for graduate school, but I thought I should mention that.

I don’t think you should consider UCSD, look at GT, UIUC, and if you get admitted UMich. Someone else asked about which school he should go to for CompE and I said which ever was cheapest, I’d say the same for ChemE.

I would think Ann Arbor is the best surrounding city, unless you want to be in a big city. No one has gone to all three (well, maybe someone but no one coming to this forum) so we can’t tell you how to compare the quality of education, and they’re all about equally prestigious.

All three schools are about equally prestigious in engineering. Personally, I hated UIUC’s campus. It’s in the middle of nowhere, it’s kind of dirty, and I didn’t really like the city. I know absolutely nothing about GaTech other than that it’s highly regarded in engineering.

Please give a more direct answer rather than just stating ideas. “Go HERE because of THIS”. And please try to elaborate on all of the factors I mentioned, thanks.

Heaven forbid you spend “too much time” researching the merits of the $212,000 worth of education your folks will be purchasing for you over the next four years!!! ;)

P.S. You do actually need to wait until you’re admitted to U. Mich to make your decision. No matter how talented, one cannot take admission for granted, especially at this late date. Plenty of regular decision applicants have already received admission.

I am not taking admission for granted, However, I want to make a decision on which college to attend on the escenario of being admitted to UMich also. This way I wont lose time when (and if) I get admitted. If I am not admitted I would also appreciate help on deciding to attend either of my two remaining options. Thanks.

Well you haven’t even been admitted into Michigan, and although suspect you will most decisions that will be release soon are rejections and waitlist.
UIUC will be a win win situation, it is known as one of the best schools in the world to study engineering. Being a international student at Illinois would not be surprising, UIUC has the largest international population of all public schools and first to third largest international population when including private. College life at Illinois and Michigan is very similar.
Yes, you should also consider UC-San Diego as it is also academically similar to UIUC and Michigan.

for ChemE i’d pick Umich, engineering rankings often times is a function of size, ChemE at Umich is actually a pretty small department, yet it still manages to rank very high in reputation. When i was at Michigan, ChemEs seemed to be a very tight knit circle of people.

Your chances of getting into MIT grad school has much more to do with your undergrad performance and research/internship experience than just which undergrad school you attend. You need to base your decision on your research and needs not just on the opinions of others. Getting accepted is the easy part…what you do when you get there matters so much more!!!

Of course I am basing my decision on my research and needs, however, my knowledge about these colleges is limited, mainly because all the info I get is second hand. Furthermore, if I accumulate opinions and points of view from others, I would be able to make a better decision, due to the increased amount of information I could gather.

I have still not taken a final decision on which University to attend. It all comes down to this: Is there any good reason to wait for the UMich decision to be released (probably April 15), or should I already accept the offer of admission from GAtech (I am choosing between those 2 now because to the best of my knowledge from the information I have gathered, they are the top 2 from my list). Help will be greatly appreciated, thanks. Help me make a major decision in my life, I need information and opinions to make the best choice.
