Hello! I am having a hard time in choosing between these two wonderful universities. Both are great institutions, but I am worried that UNC is too large and GA tech is too difficult/non supportive (as I have heard, they hold a sink or swim mentality). I am from Atlanta Ga-I actually live like 15 mins from the school. When it comes to price, UNC is about 30k while Tech is 17k (without the Zell, it is about 27k). Also, my parents both went to UNC. If it matters at all, I am completely undecided but really want to study abroad. Thank you!
As a student, UNC does not strike me as too large. This sounds weird (and I never believed students that said this to me on tours, either) but you truly do run into other students and professors just walking around on campus – even after months. Ex. I took a smallish class (~40 students) Spring '14 and I have ran into that professor several times in the last month, and he did remember me well. It 100% isn’t too large to build relationships with professors, especially if you don’t hide in the back of lecture halls. With walk-in advising hours, online advising appointment signup, etc., I feel like I’ve gotten pretty much all the academic support I’ve needed. Plus the campus is breathtakingly beautiful and I just love the community here (most everyone I talk to does as well; it is such a nice atmosphere).
Which did you choose?
It depends on how much rigor you want and what you think you may major in. If you are at all interested in the humanities UNC would be a better pick. Look at the course load of majors at the respective universities.
