Hey there! I'm moving into college this weekend and right now I'm feeling mixed emotions. I had one concern that I was hoping you guys could help me out with. Whenever I have a little down time or nothing going on, I found playing video games as a fun past time. Over the years though I have NOT made it consume my time. For example, I'd obviously take the offer to hang out or go out somewhere over gaming.

My question to you guys is this: Is there ever time to play video games in college? Or is there ALWAYS something going on in college? (Classes, parties, activities, etc.). I also spoke with my roommate earlier who does not seem to have an interest in video games like myself. Will I be bashed/teased for playing a video game in my spare/down time? I'd greatly appreciate your responses.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah I figured I wouldn’t be raging 24/7 when there was down time haha. The university I’m going to isn’t even much of a party school. My main concern at this point is not being teased for playing games in the dorm since my roommate told me he’s not big on them anyway.

My friend and I always found time to play games. In fact we usually pulled a 5-7 hour session of Left 4 Dead (1 & 2) once a week or every two weeks, that is… if we both had finished our homework and other responsibilities for the week.

I’m sure the males in college played video games even more than we did.

lol why do you care what anyone else thinks? if you think its fun play it. me personally i leave my door open when playing games and my hall mates just come right in and watch or play too. but i play sports games so it might be a little different

Three of my friends last year all played call of duty in their own rooms with headsets to communicate… And they all lived in adjacent dorm rooms haha

Earlier in high school I played a lot of games and at one point if I wasn’t working out or at practice than I was playing games, it was pretty sad and I could tell that it had a bit of an affect on the social aspects of my life. My gaming seriously dwindled during junior year though as I began to lose interest and it never really came back.

During my freshman year I was so glad that I didn’t play video games, I did useful things with my time that helped build real friendship and gain real life skills like joining a fraternity, getting a job, and going out on weekends. In my dorm we had a few “gamers” and they would pretty much lock themselves in there rooms maybe with a friend and game for hours on end. I would leave on a Friday night to go out at like 8 and come back maybe at like 2 still buzzed and they would still be there…gaming.

I think video games are pretty common and popular in college. I really don’t think you’ll be teased at all, unless you play ALL the time or you’re addicted to something like WoW or Starcraft (my roommate was addicted to Starcraft and people definitely talked about it).

Otherwise, I think video games are great for a dorm setting, especially since people can just walk in and play. My neighbors brought a Wii and we had epic Mario Kart/Super Smash battles. As long as you get your work done then it’s great. Games like Call of Duty and Halo would also be great if you get 4+ people.

Eh, I didn’t really find time to play video games until this summer. However, I’m probably going to study twice as hard before Halo 4 comes out to give myself some time to enjoy the game.

Fortunately I got a hold of one of my syllabuses (one of one of my harder classes) ahead of time and am at least 5 chapters ahead in that class. Still got a month left till school starts.

I find video games extremely boring unless they’re with a friend. Maybe when Halo 2 was still out and people still talked to each other in-game on Xbox Live I would play by myself. Sadly that doesn’t happen too often anymore.

Well I noticed a couple of you mentioned the “WoW addict”. I play WoW however, I do not let it interfere with my social life and real life priorities. Will I be talked about just cause I play WoW?

Probably, but nobody will really dislike you for it. People will laugh and make fun of each other about pretty much everything in the dorms. It will only harm your social life if it means you never get out and hang out with people.

I played League of Legends like for the entire last semester and I still had extra time to do stuff. And study. I got bored of Xbox so I went to computer games and I liked this game cause it didn’t require me to sit on my computer for a bazillion hours. I could just play a quick game and stop and go do something else. Like chess.

Just make sure when your playing WoW you don’t stay on it for like 8 hours at a time. You can say “Oh I had nothing to do that day.” But in 8 hours of time in college, there’s always something else you could of done.

Halo 4 will test many students fortitude. I’m working winter semester so I just gave to get through finals and then I can play the crap out of it.

No. As I said, if you’re addicted to it and your butt is glued to the chair and you never leave the room because of it, then some people might wonder if you have a life. But playing it moderately isn’t a problem at all.

There’s four of us in a tiny two bedroom apartment. Three of us are gamers- two are hardcore. We made a pact that we couldn’t do Halo 4 until winter break. It’s the only way we’ll survive the last month and a half of classes.

League is great for the semester. Like Patrick said, one game and you can be done (I say as we’ve been playing since 11 this morning… hey it’s my ONE day off a week :p).

halo 4 is going to be a riot. I might actually spend more than $30 bucks for this one.

no news on gta 5 yet though; that one is going to be sick as well. Is there rumor running around that it’s going to be located in LA? 5x bigger than liberty city? gaaawd

if you delete your fb like I did, you’ll have more free time. it’s definitely doable. I don’t have xbox live right now though, so I’m kind of taking a break.
