Video Games and College?

Hey guys, I'm a new user here (though I've been consulting this site for a long time). I'll be going to FSU staring the spring term.

Anyways, I've been wondering: Do you get to play video games often? I have a lot of gamer friends who claim they'll put games aside when they get to college (I call BS on that one), though it is an interesting question. Do you have time for such a time-consuming hobby in college? Is there any relation between people's grades and how often they play?

First off, how often you get to play video games is dependent on your course load and amount of hw, clubs, and other activities you wish to pursue. Of course since you can blow off all your work and stay inside and play videos but I would not recommend this.

Personally, I am not a big gamer and just brought up a ps2 with a few games to play. I rarely had the chance to play it because of classes and other commitments. It was really just brought up for the little down time I had with friends.

I know a lot of PC gamers in high school who have put off playing those games during the school year because it took up time they could not afford to spend.

As for the gaming and grade correlation, if you spend too much time gaming it will affect your grades to some extent. It really depends on how hardworking you are and your time management skills.

I play video games and love them. I have a PS3 and a 3DS and plan on getting a PS4 when it comes out.

Yes, I agree with the fact that too much gaming will cut into studying and slash your GPA.

This Fall I plan on only playing video games during the weekend. It depends on how hard my course load is.

Time management is everything in college. You manage your time well, you can still play video games.

I get this a lot.

As others have said, gaming can be detrimental to success in college. If you maintain a balance, it’s not a big deal…but some people get strung out on games and stay up all night playing them, blow off homework to game…try to study while playing video games etc. It’s not too constructive. Other people can set time limits on it though and actually hold to them. Personally, I’m not a gamer at all. I probably haven’t played a video game in 2 years at least.

If I’m not working or visiting the girlfriend out-of-state during the summer playing video games is all that I will do.

During the school year since I’ve got here I’ve been playing only as a social thing and I have to let the person know ahead of time when I’ll be able to play.

One of my guy friends, a gamer, would spend hours at night playing WOW. He got ‘average’ grades (Cs and Bs) and was a little bit unsocial. He would hang out with us whenever we asked him to, though. He had a great balance of friends and gaming, but his grades weren’t the best. He would game mostly at night and sleep some during the day. He also took a lot of online classes, so it’s not like he had to go onto campus every day.
