I've been looking around for some gap year options abroad...and the only interesting ones I've been able to find are run by British companies! I'm sure most of these British projects would have no problem letting Americans participate, but I was wondering if anyone had heard of or had any experience with American gap year volunteer or travel companies. Thanks!

There is a thread on gap years in the parents forum at the moment, which contains some ideas.

Gap years are much more common in Britain, so there's probably more demand for the organizations over there even though the population is smaller. My daughter is volunteering in Africa through Projects Abroad (also based in the UK, though they have a New York office); while most of the volunteers in her area are British, there are also Americans, Australians, a scattering from Germany, Holland, etc. The process was not at all complicated by her US citizenship. I think you'd find it similar with other organizations also. Good luck, and let me know if you want more info.
