lmao no email fun!!! : ))) eagerly awaiting my rejection !!
same. from every single program I’ve applied to
yup rejected!!! it was in my spam!!! @skatergirl27 every single one for me as well!!!
Congrats to y’all who are accepted. If you are still deciding whether or not you should go, I want to tell you: YESSS!!! because Garcia has really changed my life. The friends you make there, and the research you do, are truly eternal. If you are a current soph, getting in next year is going to be a lot easier (legend says its guaranteed if you are accepted once already).
For those who still haven’t received a decision result yet please check your spam boxes (I know cuz my likely letter landed in it last year).
If you got waitlisted, don’t worry just yet. Our friend here @daru_nut got waitlisted, got in, then became quite accomplished.
Side note: You can find some of us past participants in the Facebook group as some are returning as 2nd year hs scholar or REU. We will be piling some past stuff on it as well (safety test study materials etc) and will be glad to answer more questions.
CONGRATS AGAIN!
@UnsinkableShip >then became quite accomplished Lol
totally agree with @UnsinkableShip! garcia was the best 7 weeks of my life and its brought me more opportunities than i feel like i deserve.
reasons why garcia is better than any other science research summer program
- mentors and grad students are all super hardworking and will help guide your project. although we all like to pretned we’re solitary mad geniuses in the lab, you’ll need a lot of help along the way and and garcia you’ll find it
- ridiculous success at science competitions. like we’re talking 2 siemens national finalists, top 10 regeneron sts. a higher yield than mf rsi
- garcia focuses on group work. you might have thought all your life you “work best alone,” but once you meet your genius fellow admitees, you’ll suddenly love group work.
- ton of free time
- canoe trips, museum trips, fishing trips, its honestly ridiculous how much fun you’ll have at this prestigious of a program. i dont know how we got all our stuff done but somehow we did it
- friends. so many friends. all humble, all geniuses. the best thing that ever happened to me.
dont come at me with ur pompous asses tryna front like u dont wanna have a good time and make friends. this is gonna be one of the last fun summers before y’all get violated in college, so make it good (by going to garcia)
For those of you that didn’t get accepted, do not let this DEFINE you. Admissions processes to either summer programs and colleges feel, to an extent, like a lottery because it’s unquestionable that ALL of you are probably skilled and qualified–there’s just a cap to the size of the admission pool.
If you didn’t get into Garcia or Simons or RSI or whatever, understand that this does NOT translate into saying that you’re underqualified, and understand that you’ve got a LOT of other things you can do this summer.
An idle mind is the devil’s workshop–do not become LAZY or DISCOURAGED this summer. As my contemporaries have pointed out, Garcia is a great source of opportunities, but it’s a big world out there so stay POSITIVE and LOOK for your CHANCE to PROGRESS.
If this feels like I’m spouting some complete happy cheery kumbaya bs and that this is me trying to give you false hope for a bleak feature then you need to stop being so dang cynical
Take a day off, let yourself be disappointed, find yourself, reshift your priorities, and understand that this is just ONE setback
If you let this weigh down your mind, then this is as far as you were ever going to go in the first place–a bit crude but this is my harsh way of saying you need to PUSH FORWARD
This might not be the CC post that some of you need, but it’s the CC post you deserve.
To those of you who DID get into Garcia or other programs (but mainly Garcia cause it’s superiorest): congrats–make the MOST of it
Recognize the amazingness of the opportunity that you’ve been given and make sure you use it to its d a m n fullest
Make friends, read a lot, work hard, listen to the lectures (well…), eat kosher pizza, steal some parafilm, and wear plenty of sunscreen
You’re gonna meet some crazy people–amazing people that you could’ve met elsewhere, sure, but they’ll all be packed together in the same few hallways for those few weeks, and you’ll find that the sheer concentration of skill and dankness will be OVERWHELMING, so stay CONFIDENT, HUMBLE, and TRUE TO YOURSELF
Most importantly–trust no one who isn’t named Steven Wadolowski
To EVERYONE: good luck with the FUTURE and I hope you all find peace with your results
Did anyone get both an acceptance AND a rejection email? I got the acceptance in the morning, and then the rejection 4.5 hours later. Really playing with my emotions right now LOL. I’m waiting on a reply from them.
For y’all accepted there is still a facebook group: Just search up Garcia Summer Research 2017 on FB. Some admin deleted the link my friend @Kurisutina posted. There are a bunch of returning scholars and REUs in the group who will be able to help out with shenanigans like choosing projects.
(I’m also returning this year. Like 99% sure)
Hi all,
I just got accepted in the Garcia Scholars Program (YAY!) and I’m currently a sophomore in high school.
Having no experience with this summer camp research thingamjig whatsoever, what tips and advice can you Garcia veterans give me?
(e.g. should I stay in the dorm housing or where should I stay, I’m from out of state)
If I want to do DPSC research, how likely am I to get into that group?
Usually the DPSC group prefers local students since they can come back and continue their research after the program but if you are set on it from the beginning and talk with the mentors of that group ASAP then you shouldnt have a problem getting into it @biochemist314
I thought that is program ends at Aug 8th so I already booked my flight back at Aug 9th, but few days ago the coordinator send an email said that on 9th there will be a symposium. Can any one of the veterans tell me what is the activity on that day and is it ok to miss that? Thank you!
I wouldn’t recommend missing the symposium, since it’s the last day and everyone gets to present their summer’s research to the professors and other campers. You also get a booklet that Garcia puts together with everyone’s abstracts and some photos from summer activities, as well as other mementos like a t-shirt with everyone’s signatures, etc. Try rescheduling your flight? I don’t think you’d want to miss it
The symposia is pretty much everything holycrayon said. In addition to that, some professors from Brookhaven National Laboratory come and watch. Its really good practice for any future research competitions (ISWEEEP/ ISEF/ JSHS) since you will be presenting in front of reputable scientists and leaders in their field (last year one of the leaders in hydrogen fuel cell research came to watch the symposia). Thats also where you get all your gifts (yearbook, tshirt, etc.) and its a rewarding way of showing everyone what you accomplished over the course of the Summer
