I sent Gates my provisional award letter for UCLA which consists of:
Federal Pell Grant: $1,600
Cal Grant: $6,141
University Grant: $5,730
Work Study: $2,500
Loans: $4,216

The amount Gates gave me was $6,716. They came up with this figure by adding the work study and loans together. SO that means i dont have to take out any loans or commit to any work study.

My efc is $2,000 by the way. It doesn't cover EFC at all.. only the work study and loans for me. But I'm fine with that cuz i recieved about $2,000 in private scholarships anyway. So I'm set for freshman year.

There's the Organization of Chinese Americans, United Negro College Fund, and Hispanic Scholarship Fund. General policies seem to vary depending on which you fall under.

There is a leadership conference for freshmen in the fall. I think there is only 1 conference though. Congrats to you both (skidmarx & Death_Hammer)! . . . Kinda wish I had more loans now...

Dani - skidmarx sounds like he is under OCA. I wouldn't worry about it. I think you and I are covered.

I just need to start thinking about how I'm going to pay the EFC now. Darn. I wish I had applied to lots of small scholarships now. Aren't you glad this Gates thing is renewable? :-D

gphoenix--That doesn't sound right, because I was told by the woman at OCA that the scholarship covers EVERYTHING that is not covered by the school. Skidmarx makes it sound like all he/she's getting is the self-help. That doesn't seem right...and besides, if he's under OCA and got his letter, where are ours?

Hmm... darn. I just read the fine print to one of my schools' policy. Lunknot is right... scholarships don't go towards reducing the EFC. Which means I am stuck paying it -_-'''.

Dani - he sent in his letter a week after he got it. I think I sent mine in a few days after, so that means I should be getting mine soon. When did you send yours in?

I think the lady from OCA says that it will cover loans and work study, NOT EFC. Theoretically, everything is covered then, because the EFC is covered from your parents. It does suck a bit... but at least you got the rest covered.

She said very specifically that it covers EVERYTHING except EFC. "The point of the scholarship is that you don't have anything to worry about financially" or something to that effect. Unless she flat-out lied to me, that's what the scholarship covers for us OCA kids. Total Cost of Attendance - EFC = Scholarship.

I faxed my stuff in on the 5th, but she called me saying I needed an additional form with my EFC on it filled out by my finaid office. THAT got faxed in on the 12th.

I'm not sure what you're panicking about. That's what we've all been saying for many many posts now. Skidmarx said the same thing too. Because he got money for everything except EFC, which is pretty much everything else. Don't worry so much!

(Darn ... still wondering how I'm going to pay the EFC.)

As a generally rule of thumb, it seems they have a two to two & a half weeks return policy on those letters. Like I said, I wouldn't stress about it too much.

Oh, I didn't notice that about skidmarx's scholarship. Whoops!

But yeah, what I'm panicking about is whether I get it or not. :P I still find it hard to believe that someone like me would be eligible to win.

Also, I thought you didn't have a high EFC at all?

It is amazing what we are capable, is it not?

No... the EFC is only a few thousand. But parents can't pay for anything, so I am stuck paying it all. Yes, my summer earnings can go for that, but the summer earnings are also supposed to pay for living expenses during the school year and I have no idea if I can do both while living a nice college life. I suppose Gates paying the work study means I get free money later, but... sigh

Hmmm... yea I do have an EFC near zero. But I'm refering to the school's version of the EFC, which is definitely a few thousand. Not the federal EFC. They haven't said anything about living expenses... we shall see yet.
