Gates Millenium Scholarship 2011-2012

itzbarbi3lykeduh: Good luck to you to :)

@zhengmaster: I dont have every single space fill out cuz where i live and go to school, they dont give out alot of awards. but im not to worry about it cuz i read from a past scholar that he/she only had about 3 and still got the scholarship…essays are the most important!

@zhengmaster
You dont by chance live in Wichita, KS do you?

I applied! :D

I only have 4 honors/awards. One was a scholarship to take religion classes. One was for participation in a program. One was for a scholarship. Another one was a scholarship for prep classes from the school.

They’re all strange. What do you think?

Remember that question about short-term goals and long-term goals? Should I be like my long term goals are to ACCOMPLISH so and so and my short term goals are to retain my motivation by so and so. What do you think?

I am new to this thread. I tried to look for the answer to these questions but couldn’t find them. So I’ve done over 1,000 hours of community service but that’s because I’ve been committed to organizations for years. However the application only allows you to put the total amount of hours for a set time frame. What should I do?
Also for the awards, I’ve been on the honor roll and head of school’s list at my school for years. Do I need to repeat the award for every year I received it?
Can I send in a resume?
Just confirming, this scholarship isn’t restrictive right?
Lastly, do they take a look at which high school you come from, because one of the reasons my gpa isn’t top notch is due to how extremely competitive my school is. It is considered one of the top ten best all-girls schools in the nation.

^I highly doubt it. My school is really competitive too (not like that matters much admissions wise, anyways). The only way they would even know if your school is top notch is through googling. Transcripts and the school profile are sent to them if you are a finalist.

random question:
Is anyone already into college?
I was accepeted EA to Georgetown. Any fellow hoyas?

borkborkbork: Your honors are good. and also, thats a great way to access the prompt.

sam12241992: The main restriction is that you have to be considered a minority applicant. As for your hours, focus on the time frame. only go as far as sophmore year. say you get 300 hours? You are on an excellent pace. the average applicant has I believe 200ish hours( I have 196). As for GPA, as long as its above 3.0, they dont really care. And no, the dont judge schools, It’s all individual performance. However, they aren’t looking for the next einstein. The scholarship is based more on essays and service than academics. If it were an academic scholarship, the second question on the application would be considered redundant.

sam12241992:I got accepted into UAHuntsville and NYU Poly. Im currently taking 3 classes at UAHuntsville(due to internship) and planning to attend NYU in the fall. Im also still waiting on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to reply( I only applied to see if I could actually make it)

@LocoArts
Congrats! Two girls from my school got accepted to NYU too. Maybe you’ll meet them :)

@locoarts
I am also participating in an internship. I am conducting my own research at the House Ear Institute. I am in the process of writing my research paper with my mentor, which will be submitted for publication at a scientific journal. I am so excited. What is your internship about?

lol NYU… I’ve been around that area too many times. That place will rob your pockets; so damn expensive and so bad with aid. It’s probably a lot harder for OOS students since they don’t even get state aid and are forced to dorm in expensive NY. It’s somewhat of a party school.

NYU Poly is in Bklyn so its probably different. And they are VERY good with the money. They are not as expensive as NYU.

All of you are WAY to concerned if X number of hours, or if you can fill up your EC’s? How about if I got too many bad grades? Your school is “competetive” and I’m going to hope they realize that!

Blah Blah Blah!!! I say this because you are all stressing over nothing. First of all, you are applying, you can’t change the facts of your app at this time… Submit your app, hopefully not one minute before the deadline. If the folks at gmsp find you interesting, they don’t care if you have taken 4 or 6 ap classes. They could give a crap if 2 lines in your EC section are blank. They DO care if what you have done and accomplished was meaningful and they see that you are the type of person that is going to do good works. GMSP isn’t looking for “perfect” applicants, they are looking for passionate people, kids that are go getters. Write essays that show them that you are that student!

sam12241992: Mine is the NASA InSPIRESS level II project. I’m in charge of setting up a mission for the future exploration of one of Jupiter’s moons. I had to enroll as a college student to get in though. This term i gotta set a budget, design, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

borkborkbork:I cried laughin when I say the tuition… $45,000 a year… almost jumped off a cliff. That’s why I’m here… I worked superhard for NYU Poly. My admission essay was a beast!!

Submitted the app. Now, I wait. T_T
