Gates Millenium Scholarship 2011-2012

NYSP2010 - Do they only let you know only if they chose you or do they also tell you straight up if you didnt get it?

Does anybody know when decisions come out?

i’d submit it anyways. the pell grant cut off is closer to 60000.

and grrr, they will not let you change the dates for the “volunteer work” once you pick one and I did it WRONG. im kinda mad now. I’ve done like 1400 hours and i only wrote 336 because of i misunderstood the instructions.

The problem is, my parents earn around 100,000 yearly. I used the Pell Grant calculator and it doesn’t look so hot. Why do I feel like the last few days have gone down the drain…?

I heard decisions are in Late March - Early April. It’s on page 22 of the thread. (or 21)

well i hate to say this but you probably aren’t eligble. fill out the fafsa and you’ll get the feedback within a day (which is too late for the Gates deadline) but you could write them a letter and withdraw your application then.

IM just freaking out here guys.
Ive submitted my applicartion but…
I only Reported my FINAL Junior year grades, even though they were sepearted into two semesters.
Do you think I would be penalized for this?

uh oh, website is kinda flickering. working one second and not working the next.

skhaer - I suppose I could do that. I was planning to submit my FAFSA by this Friday, but I guess I’ll have to step on it and submit it tomorrow to see what happens. I should have read the eligibility information more carefully last fall… -___-

I’m sorry, this scholarship is so much work so I imagine your upset, I would be too.
But just submit it since you’ve done so much and hope for the best.
Maybe your parents could minimize their income as much as possible and eliminate some savings funds by paying off a car or something. I’ve heard people do that legallly.
idk…my stuff was pretty straightforward so i never thought about it.

I was kind of hoping that the fact that our home was foreclosed last year, and having a car to pay off for, would kind of help, but… eh. At least it motivated me to look for more scholarships tonight. Submitted the application right after I posted my last comment.

So, when do we need to submit our FAFSA info?

abercrombieindy: well I’m sure they’re getting harassed with a lot of calls from people whose questions could simply be answered by checking the gmsp website, and that’s kind of annoying when people don’t do their research. Not saying that’s you! But I’m sure they’re getting stressed out on their end too.

LilBabySeaOtter: You just tell them when you get accepted into the scholarship program. It doesn’t have to be decided now–when you become a finalist, they will ask for a letter of admission, but it just needs to be from any college (they just wanna see you’re going somewhere) not necessarily the one you will go to. But yeah, when you are accepted, you send a copy of your admission to the university you will be attending (but you have until like June so no rush on your decision)

collegefreak34: 150 asians, 150 native americans, 350 african american, 350 hispanic. Is what I’ve heard.

skhaer: they should at least glance through them all, I would hope, rather than looking at your first and just tossing it out…that’d be cruel. I don’t think ALL my essays were phenomenal, so I think it’s a balanced look from all your essays.

idaisyl: What did your pell grant calculator say? I believe if your EFC is anything around 4690 and lower you’ll get pell grant, if not you don’t qualify :frowning: Good luck

FYI I think Pell Grant matches up to around 60,000 income…because with my family’s $62,000 income I just barely qualified (almost didn’t)

VHT510: People who didn’t make it usually find out later than those who did. So you can kinda tell when finalist round comes around and everyone else is celebrating and you’ve gotten nothing. However, if they do acceptances by paper mail again this year, this won’t hold true for the acceptance part because if you live all the way across the country from the scholarship office, you’ll find out last (sucks).

Purephecha1950: Finalist round around 3/8, acceptances around 4/16

Since the deadline’s passed now…the best thing for you guys to do is relax  I know that might sound impossible since you’re worked up about it but honestly it’s two months until you know anything, spend those two months enjoying your senior year because it does go by fast. No help in worrying about it now

collegefreak34: By February 15th, if it’s the same as last year.

and is there a code for GMS? Do I mail them my SAR? How do they receive my info? By the way, thanks for being so helpful.

Is there any award associated with being a finalist? Or are there more essays to fill out? Or is it just a notification mid-way through the process that you’re still in the running, just to set your mind at ease?

so if the deadline was january 10 at 11:59 PM EASTERN time, then the deadline for the california and pacific coast was @ 9:00 PM???

YES! I had thought it was 11:59 PM PACIFIC time, so I freaked out when I got home at 7 PM today.

Oh, and uhh trying to pull up my Pell Grant calculator again. Probably going to take a few minutes. :/

so…did everyone do ok? applications submitted? Confident?

Let all that stress go ppl…The most hectic part is probably over. Im praying each of you get this…look for LocoArts when you get to the ceremony…Good luck everyone:)

dontforget17: I doubt it, you can always confirm through SAR or transcript.

My logic: AP students dont get their grades until May(at least in my district) so my application was the same way

Thank you Locoarts.
But after I let that stress go…
More stress came in.

Becasue I have found out confusing information:

Does APIASF have another scholarship program?
APIASF also manages the Gates Millennium Scholars/Asian Pacific Islander Americans (GMS/APIA) program. Funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by UNCF, the GMS/APIA program provides outstanding Pell Grant eligible APIA students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline they choose and a graduate degree in specific fields. For more information on the Gates Millennium Scholars program, please click here. All information regarding the eligibility criteria and how to obtain an application can be found there. Remember you must complete BOTH applications in order to be considered for the APIASF and GMS Scholarships.

Now I dont know what to do or what this information is telling me in general.
Im freaking out. Im sorry for double posting or starting a thread… Im just nervous.
Do I need to complete THIS form too? To be eligible for gates?
Or is this a different scholarship from Gates Millenium?
