aw bork, c’mon! you can totally win this! if you won the horatio alger scholarship, you are definitely doing something right! and that is $20k & trip to dc! don’t be too grim!

my family makes just about the same as yours do, so let’s keep our chins up. i understand. but no point in grieving about the past now n_~ just hope!

<3 So I was creeping on here…and I loved the motivation/encouragement that everyone was giving everyone else! I hope that we all get it–you guys are all amazing and I haven’t even met you yet. 8)

Alright…March, come on! (Actually, May 1st would be very nice…because by then, we’d all know where we’re headed!)

On another note, does anyone know how many readers read your essays?

@collegefreak, I’ll try to call them up tomorrow. It’s 90% likely tomorrow will be a snow day up here in NY. It doesn’t seem like they are offering anymore national scholarships. They’ve already emailed, mailed, and called the national recipients. And the list is up online.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. But another thing about my recs is that they were probably postmarked today, even if it was in the post office yesterday night. I highly doubt I’m getting this in all seriousness. Now I have to hunt for smaller scholarships tomorrow…

@borkborkbork: dont worry man. If you won a scholarship, that definitely shows potential in you. definitely do the small scholarships and such, since you’ll definitely get them. just dont worry and just hope (like i am).

@thatelephantt: I had one person read my essay, but he edited mine like 10 times over again and again through all of them. lmao. dont think my essays were “top notch”. just hope they see my efforts and such even with my low income life ><

borkborkbork: I still gonna say keep your head up… GMS is not lenient at all with deadlines…but you will find out in a week if your application was turned in or disqualified

im sure someone has asked about this before, but on the FAFSA form about the income tax, if my parents haven’t completed any income tax return for 2010, do use 2009’s??

Hey guys! So I was browsing through some of the past years’ scholars’ profiles and most of them were listed as a Science/Math major and even the scholarship website itself said that they were striving to help minorities participate in science/math fields. What if I put my intended major as International Relations? It did say that it doesn’t matter what your undergraduate major is…but will that make me less of a competitor than those whose intended majors are in the math/science fields? Does anyone know any scholars that WEREN’T majors in said fields? And lastly, I was thinking about the essay questions and I found that most of them were worded as if they wanted us to describe a time that we struggled so will the committee weigh need/struggle over achievement?

VHT510- I filled out the CSS Profile and used that information for the FAFSA and I used the 2009 tax returns for the CSS Profile. I think I’ll have to update my information once my parents do their 2010 tax returns but…that’s probably not until mid-February.

Oh wow, I just realized…I literally wrote “I don’t ever have to take math in college!” And ended an essay like that. If they’re looking for math majors, oops. Hahaha.

Haha! Thanks, GA2012MOM. Actually, having grown up in NY, it’s nice to see snow again! But geez, tomorrow’s going to be our fourth day out…getting kinda old. Oh well, can’t complain. More time for scholarships!

So, this may be a little late, but I want to wish everyone good luck! I know that we all deserve it and I hope Bill Gates just sees all the talent within the applicants and decides to fund all those who applied X].

VHT510: Actually I think you’re supposed to use 2010’s. So you should get that done ASAP. Worst comes to worst, I guess you could use 2009’s and just fill out corrections when your parents do the 2010 taxes.

Hello everyone this ismy first post. I made a terrible terrible mistake on the application. I was rushing on the deadline due to the servers messing up. I just wanted to input my application. By accident I submitted my 7th essay 2x. It was in my 1st essay response and 7th essay response. I contacted gates through the website exactly after with my first essay. this was before the deadline. I called and they said they wouldnt take it. ALl of my other areas on the application seem solid. A winner from 2 years ago read my essays and thought they were really good too. I guess what Im trying to ask is past winners and prospectives, do I have a chance to win it? Or did I cost myself this great scholarship off a simple copy and paste error?
