In the previous years applicants received notification that they were finalists around the first two weeks of March.

does anyone know how many finalists do they choose?

They never release how many finalists they choose. Only how many applicants applied.

Who’s excited?, March is around the corner!

A friend of mine was a Gates finalist last year. She said her letter said that Gates received over 21,000 applications and only 1,900 were selected as semifinalists. 1000 of those became recipients but my friend wasn’t one of them.

I’m getting so excited for the moment!! I hope this year won’t be a bad year-getting rejected from the school of my dreams and not getting the gates millennium scholarship. Although, I hope this year’s good and the opposite happens!!! i hope and pray for everyone to have that GOOD year!!1 :D

Yea I am really scared after being rejected from the Ron brown scholar…I kinda don’t have many options. I hope I make the semi finals. We’ll find out any day now.

I hope everyone receives the scholarship. Good Luck!!!

This odd story might be of some comfort to all of us. Last year, a senior at my school completed the GMSP application and eagerly awaited an answer, which he got in the form of a letter telling him that he was not a semi-finalist. He was extremely disappointed to say the least. I remembered him going around and telling everyone that he didn’t get the scholarship. But about a week later, he received another letter saying he WAS a semi-finalist, at which point they requested all of the additional information (FAFSA, college letter of acceptance, etc.). In the end, he got it, and all turned out well. So if you get that rejection letter from GMSP, remember that there is always that one sliver of hope.

I am immigrant from Europe, but I am white.
In our school we have:
7% Whites
8% African American
15% Spanish
70% Asian
Can I apply?
Do you know any white immigrant who got that scholarship before?

Parents can really be nuts sometimes (I know, I am one). We make mistakes and yet we really just want the best for our kids. We get so scared that we will not be able to give our kids what they deserve to have and so we are frantically trying to find any assistance that is available. Don’t resign this just because there is pressure. Instead know that whatever you choose to do next - will be about you, for you!

I would gently suggest that you not try to show indifference but try and tell them how pressured and anxious you really feel. You may not get anywhere, but, you will feel better about releasing the tension.

Take a deep breath, the tears do pass. You have your whole life ahead of you.

Best of luck to you!

Do not be discouraged I applied also and did not get it. Ron Brown is highly selective and although you might have been a great candidate, some of those candidates might have been in a greater need than us. After reading past Ron Brown Scholar profiles, many of them came from a SERIOUSLY underprivliged background, such as being in a foster home, poor immigrants from another country etc,. Plus it is only march, there are many more scholarships to apply for. Don’t sleep on the small $1,000 scholarships either. APPLY FOR THEM ALL.!

Yea I’m trying to stay positive.

Good luck to everyone! I can’t wait to hear the results. We all worked hard on the essays! I spent 4-5 hours on each essay and had 3 people look it over. It was a PAIN. I didn’t start the essays until a week before the deadline and that was a horrible decision I made.

Any day now guys!! I’m horribly excited and terribly nervous. I really really hope we are all finalists, after I spent 20 solid days of my life on those essays and nothing else, It’d be a pretty sweet reward.

I anticipate we’ll get letters/email (anyone know which one?!) sometime in the next 2 weeks.

btw, did anyone ever get anything after that confimation email? That was the only time I got anything, it was just three emails, confirming my app was in and my reccommender and nominator had done theirs.

Nope, I’ve only gotten this three notifications as well. I really hope I become a semifinalist though… I actually spent a lot of time on those essays as well, even on Christmas break :-/

oh no! i never received a confirmation email for my application! just my recommender and nominator! im freaking out!!!

Good luck to all! <3

Does anyone know if they will be notifying us by mail or email? Or both? Haha. I’m super anxious!

@ Purepecha9510; check again! the e-mail was titled “GMS Nominee Form Complete”

I’m anxious and have counted down the days. Being selected as a scholar would be the icing on the cake for my senior year. Good luck to all the applicants. Next week may be our week !:)
