Gates Millenium, should i do it?

What are my chances...honestly?

Should I devote the hours this application takes, if my chances are slim. I have countles other college applications and scholarships applications, should i do it?

The thing is…if you are eligible for Pell grants, the benefits greatly outweigh the risks. The only thing that you are sacrificing is a bit of time, which really isn’t much more than adding another college application to your profile. However, if you do get the scholarship, it will pay not only for the undergraduate school of your choice (giving you a basically limitless selection of colleges) but also for your graduate training!

Look at yourself this way.

-You have a near-perfect GPA. A 3.89 uw indicates that you’ve gotten an A in nearly every single class that you’ve taken.
-You have a rigorous courseload that is probably in the top percentage of high school students across the nation.
-You’ve got a wide range of respectable extracurricular activities, including leadership positions, artistic commitment that shows dedication to a single goal for many years, and community service/volunteerism.
-You meet the eligibility requirements.

Your choices are only slim because the scholarships are competitive. But why should you shy away from such an amazing opportunity just because the scholarships are competitive? Someone has to win them, and that someone could be you next year. I mean, it’d be a different story if you were asking this question with a 3.4, a couple of honors classes and one or two activities - nothing against those students, but they aren’t the type that normally win the Gates Millennium. You, however, are.

I say go for it, take the time to apply for the scholarship and spend your time on it like you would on any other college application. That’s a lot of scholarship money up for grabs in exchange for very little time commitment. I wish I had been eligible for it when I was in high school.

hodancer924, you should apply. Get off your hiney and do it right away as you don’t have much time. Here is the thread for this year, however, some folks just don’t “get it” so ask if you have a question.
