Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

Has anyone else received anything in the mail???

Whoa! The GMS winners have been chosen?

How is this possible since the deadline to send finalist stuff isn't until April 11th?

I'm wicked confused.

All finalist haven't been chosen yet.

Rolling notifications...

I'm going to need a defibrillator...STAT!

:/

That post made me get all my thing together and fax it to UNCF/GMS. Then I realized that I can't fax long distnace or call for that matter. :(

what?!
they're already notifying winners?

Well, technically, all I've seen posted is someone who was notified that they didn't win.

I'm getting nervous now.

hmmm, this is just my guess but maybe MOBY meant that he got an email saying he wasn't selected as a finalist

Obviously if one is not selected as a finalist, one does not have the chance to be the winner.

right sodium but Speak_Easy might have misunderstood it as MOBY being selected as a Finalist but ended up not receiving the scholarship after he faxed in everything

for those who already submitted it in: do you get a notification if you have submitted everything in ?

The wording of the letter MOBY posted seemed to imply that he was a Finalist that did not get the scholarship. Otherwise why would it say "We regret to inform you that you were not selected as one of the scholarship recipients for the 2008-2009 academic year."? I would guess that if they didn't choose him as a Finalist it would say something along the lines of ...We regret to inform you that you were not selected to continue in the GMS competition...

Anyone who was not selected as a Finalist: would you please post the letter you received?

yeah...i agree with the above post....the letter said 13000 nominees....i thought that 60000 applied...could it be that 13000 were the one chosen at finalist....

I talked with someone who works at GMS, and they said all applicants will be notified by the end of March regarding their application status. Notification means either a finalist letter or the letter that MOBY received. If you're a finalist and end up not being selected, I believe those letters will recognize your finalist status explicitly.

As for the number of applicants (13,000), the increase for 2008 seems accurate considering the trend over the past several years (11,000 in 2006 and 12,000 in 2007). Although GMS does not officially release the number of finalists chosen for the second phase of GMS, I was told that the finalist selection is very competitive so, if you're a finalist, you should be proud.

From my experience, I know of Gates Scholars who were notified of their selection a few days after submitting their forms and documents. GMS will not notify you about whether you have submitted your documents, so you may want to call and confirm that they've received your materials. Notification of Gates Scholars tends to start before April 11 (usually around the end of March), so it would be wise to submit your documentation as soon as possible to remain competitive for the GMS. Some of you will probably be receiving notification letters in the next week or two.

I never finished my application and was notified that I didn't get it. Hehe.

Yeah, I'm still waiting on a notification myself. I had an AA friend who received his rejection letter from them on Friday, the 21st. I'm pretty sure I'll be receiving one as well but the waiting process is pretty nervewracking. I just want to know and be done with it.

I'll probably get a notification sometime this week.

I am also waiting for a letter and like you said lalalexi I just want to know because I've been so nervous these past couple of days. Hopefully we get a notification sometime this week :]

I thought it seemed too early for notifications to be going out to finalists, but from Moby's original post, is sure seemed like he was not selected as a GMS winner.

Oh, well, Best of luck to everyone waiting! ::fingers crossed::

@ Speak Easy--- did you turn in your information yet. I wonder if they send you the letter after you submitted you items...or do they just send it to you.

yeah i just got my rejection today

oh well- i wasn't pell grant eligible anyhow :(
