Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

Dinkswizzle:

Your rejection as a scholarship winner or as a finalist? Sorry to hear it either way.

i'm new to this website.
but i have a quick question - would it say for Gates Millenium Scholarship?? that's something completely different right

because i think i applied for this .. but i also applied another one from that website - the APIASF which i got into the next round.

but i still have not receive anything from GMS which go figure i prob. got rejected out of soooo many applications.. mine was horrible i did it at the last min.

trangiee: They (the Gates and the APIASF) are seperate scholarships. You are elligible to win both (judging from some of the posts I've read) if you entered in both. Finalists for GMS were notified a few weeks ago and those that did not make it are starting to receive notification this week.

About the previous discussions: does GMS notify winners before the deadline to turn in the apps? Also, do they only evaluate you at this time based on the forms you'd sent in or your essays also? Thank you!

Why is everyone talking as if all 1000 scholars have been chosen?

All of the finalist haven't even been chosen yet...

people are being notified on a rolling basis which likely means that they are still reading applications.

Is still haven't received anything. And I'm not letting the wait build cynicism within me.

Please, everyone who hasn't heard anything...remain optimistic!

KONVIRSE

So there's still a chance of being a finalist?

Yes, all my stuff has been sent. I just sent GMS an email to confirm if they've received my stuff (most likely since I mailed/faxed last week).

I don't know for sure, but I imagine if GMS has started notifying finalists that they have not been selected as winners, that probably would mean that all the finalists have been selected.

It's still weird that they've started telling people they've been rejected as winners when the deadline to turn in finalists' paperwork is April 11.

Those of you who received letters, was it telling you that you weren't chosen as winners or not chosen as finalists???

Actually I think that they are letting people know that they've been rejected as finalists not scholars. The lady I spoke to today said that they review peoples (the finalists) apps as things are coming up but no final decisions are made until after the 11th or April; which is the deadline to fax them your stuff. From talking to her it just seemed like all those people who didn't get anything are just getting the word that they haven't been selected as a finalist; despite the ambiguity of the letters...

Rejected, but I expected it, I didn't submit the documentation.

Rejected too...just got the letter in the mail :( in a way I was also expecting it.

hi guys! im new to this ...i've been selected as a finalist also! since my SAR doesn't verify that im a citizen, the gates ppl told me to fax them my financial aid award letter from any college/university. my colleges haven't given me the letter yet and i talked to the financial aid advisors and they all said that they cannot promise if they can give me the letter in time or not...idk what to do...someone PLEASE help me!

you need to either fax in a copy of your passport or certificate of citizenship. Don't worry about the thing that says "don't copy" on the certificate, it's ok for colleges and scholarships it seems

i told her that i could fax a copy of my passport or certificate of naturalization...but the lady told me that the only thing GMS ppl accept is financial aid packet...

has anyone who has only recieved mail notification been named a finalist???

oh dang, ummm, I faxed my certificate of naturalization in...I might have to call them now, thanks

i don't know why they can't accept the certificate or passport...gosh, it is still a proof....have u received an award letter from any school? this advisor at my community college told me to go to SS office and show them my passport and get a receipt verfiying that im a citizen....so then i'll take that receipt to the college and then they will be able to give me a letter...

if you are a permanent resident, do you still need to show them proof?
it never said anything about proof of citizenship on the checklist so i don't know what you guys are talking about.

if SAR says that the school needs to verify ur citizenship status then u need to verify it otherwise, i think u r set to go!

Since many of you seem knowledgeable on this, please help me out!

I am a permanent resident, and my SAR says "my citizenship status has been confirmed." Under that, it also says "your fafsa has been selected for a step called verification. Your school has the right to request copies of any financial documents they need." I haven't mailed my SAR yet, but do you think GMSP would want to see my proof of citizenship? I have a financial aid letter from University of Miami, if needed.

Another question...it's really bothering me. I have faxed my high school transcript to GMSP. It has all my grades since 9th grade and many other information, including number of community service hours. None of my community service hours (listed under volunteer services in the GMS application) have been entered into the computer as I am still doing hours, and I was suggested to turn in ALL the hours at once. Therefore, the box under community service hours in my transcript reads "Zero." Do you think this would be detrimental to my application? Or do they only look for grades?

Thanks a lot in advance!

i think u don't need a proof of citizenship cuz urs say that it "has been confirmed"
i don't think they will look at anything else besides grades...they shouldn't...they don't have time...i mean they have to go through so many transcripts...
has anyone found out how many finalists were chosen?

Got a letter today notifying me I'm not one of the 1,000 chosen.
I never finished the application...
