Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

@cachememory,

Can you post the letter you got? Since you say you didn't finish the application that means you definitely were not chosen as a ** finalist ** and your letter should clear up whatever issues the people on CC had with figuring the wording of these letters out.

THANKS!

i'm really scared...is it really hard for a finalist to get the scholarship? i have set up my hopes really high, i don't wanna see rejection....AAHHH

I think 13000 out of the 60000 are a finalist.

@memberofthevrwc,

It's the same letter someone already posted (post #720 on pg 48).

Thanks cachememory.

So if I remember my sophomore probability correctly, the chances of becoming a finalist are approximately 21.7% (13000/60000), the strict probability of getting the scholarship are around 7.8% (1000/13000), and the probability of doing both (since that is in fact necessary to become a GMS recipient), is 1.7%.... Am I wrong? If I am someone please correct me!

memberofthevrwc: Where did you get the statistics for the numbers of finalists choosen? A 1.7% chance is so crazy...

I think it's 1300 kids applied and the numbers of the Finalists are unknown
at least i hope so

@JohnN... I used the number that ahhhhhhhh used and I believe Proud Husky did too (not certain but I believe Proud Husky used the number, ahhhhhhhhh definitely did)

just for kicks, does anyone know the criteria that is used to weed people out?

60,000 sounds too much...i believe there were 13,000 applicants...but im still scared...i hope i get the scholarship.
if we corrected fafsa w/ 2007 forms, do we need to resubmit our SAR...my efc didn't change, though

I agree with Hahastupidme and aubrey. I don't know where the number 60,000 came from because in the letter that was posted, it stated that this year there were 13,000 nominees.

did anyone ask the gms ppl about the number of finalists chosen? i don't wanna get my hopes too high

ok, maybe this is too much but you would think some people didn't finish their applications or what not. So, the preliminary number could be 60k but how many of those were completely finished? I also think there were only 13k completed apps

i dont think theres that many finalists because today i called the asian lady and asked her if they're received my info in the office and i told her my name, and in like 5 seconds, she said "ur file is complete"
so. im guessing she didnt have to go through a lot of files to get to mine?

do they just look at ur SAR and transcript to verify ur eligibility? or is there any other criteria...
Hamman did u find out what to use for ur proof of citizenship? please let me know what they say...

wow... first time in a while this thread isn't on the first page.... time to change that (bump)

Do you guys think some finalists will be notified by this Friday, March 28th? The website says the end of March.

The GMS lady emailed me back today to let me know that they received my stuff & my application is complete.

...just waiting now. :/

does anyone else besides me have to verify their citizenship?

OMG I am very anxious to hear from them, I am still very proud to be one of five finalists at my school. About 20 people applied out of a graduating class of 53. I am very proud to be a finalist, however now that my documentation is submit, I am very anxious to hear from them, this morning I received a call from Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and I was not able to answer, if it was about Gates I wanna know so badly. My AA friend says that UNCF called him asking if he had any questions, so I'm hoping the HSF was doing the same thing.

My school's college acceptance rate is very high, and so is college attendance, for th past couple years there have always been 2 gates scholars per year, very god for a public school. This year there are five finalists. 2 African Americans (twins), 2 Mexican Students (I am one), and 1 asian student, we are trying to stick together in this, since we know we don't compete against each other any more, well the twins do, and so do I, but we hope we all become finalists.
