Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

JohnN - You sent your documents by mail? Is that why it took you a week to confirm it with them?

yan ... you are not alone. I submitted all my stuff on the 26th.

You guys I think those of you who submitted your documents after the 17th should not panic. I submitted my documents on the 13th... so I am most likely to panic.

I don't think ANYONE should panic before the 15th of April.

mine was confirmed on the 2nd of april...but i submitted everything on the 26th...

Mr. Tang: No, I faxed my documents on the 14th and then sent them an email to confirm that it was received. They replied to me about a week later.

yeah same here...they replied to my email after a week...

Yeah, I didn't email them for a confirm until the 24th. So replying on the 25th seems pretty good, it's just hard to gauge just how long they've had my application.

I'm not panicking, I'm just confused by how this process works. It seems really inefficient.

does anyone know how many scholars are selected under each organization? i know someone asked this in earlier posts...

I don't think it's evenly split 250 per organization. I would imagine it is somehow proportional, because you have to take into account the differences in population size of each minority group, which would probably be reflected in the number of applicants for each organization. For example, evenly splitting it 250 per group would give Hispanics a huge disadvantage while really helping out Native Americans.

I don't think it's exactly proportional to population size, but I think that GMS would take into account that if there are this many Asian applicants then there will need to be at least this many Asian finalists and eventually this many Asian scholars.

I got notification yesterday! I'm a Gates Scholar! :D

Good luck to the rest of you.

congrats Luckyxboy7! :D

...now, as has been the norm ... what's your ethnicity and when did you fax everything in? Plus, east coast or west coast?

electrequiem, my D faxed her materials very late in the day on the 14th, (Friday) so we are assuming processing didn't even start till Monday the 17th.

D called Gates 2 days ago, (Friday) and the woman to call back if she had nothing in the mail by Monday. I guess that means we will know either way.

D was concerned because her acceptance letter she sent mentioned she was a Questbridge Match Scholar, and that Gates might not want to give her their aid as well. She still has unmet need that Gates would provide in work study and purchase of a computer, so we are keeping our fingers crossed!

GAMOM, please let us know whenever you hear something because I'm stuck in the same situation. I had to send in my Harvard FA letter to prove my citizenship and I'm afraid they might not give me the scholarship since harvard gave me a lot of money already

Do you guys think people who faxed their documents on the 13th/14th but haven't heard back should call APIASF? According to GA2012MOM's post, it seems that APIASF will tell of our status on Monday?

Mr. Tang, my D is AA.

Oh, right. I thought UNCF notified finalists a week ago?

Who knows, just going on what the person at Gates said 2 days ago.

Why do some of you guys have to confirm your citizenship? Are you legal residents?

I know I haven't won anything and I'm not counting my eggs before they hatch, but just another question about what GMS will cover.

Brown was wicked generous. They pretty much expect a me to pay a couple thousand as a student contribution and then starting sophomore year, I'd have a work-study for another 2,000 dollars or so.

I'm assuming GMS wouldn't pay for the student contribution, do you think I could talk Brown into changing that to something that would be GMS applicable?

I'm starting to worry that I'll have scholarship money...but nowhere I can put it towards. There's no point replacing a university grant with private scholarship money, when I actually need that money to pay for something else. Anyone know what to do in this situation?

Congrats to all the scholars! I'm so happy for you guys!

I'm Asian American.

Faxed in my stuff on the 13th...or whenever I was notified. I got all that stuff in pretty early.

Any other stats?

Buena suerte!
