Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual Life at College

hello there, '09 applicant here.
im a homo chinese (still in the closet) from a very conservative background, where any sexual deviant behaviour is still frown upon.
naturally, i considered how i'll finally be able to come out and just be myself if i do succeed in getting into a US college, where homosexuality is accepted as way of life.

basically, im curious about the LGBT life over there...
which colleges are the most gay-friendly/gay-hostile?
how promiscious can the gay students there get?
(im shy, and still pretty conservative and hence not too comfortable with promisciousity)
what are the cool events for gay students? etc etc etc

sorry for my lack of knowledge and thanks for sharing.

I don't know alot about Ivies or other prestigious schools, but I would say probably avoid most state schools (except those like UC-Berkeley that are known for being very liberal-minded). From my experience, many people at those schools aren't the most open-minded about things, especially in the South and Midwest.

In my experience, gay people aren't really any more promiscuous than straight students, but that's not really saying much because straight students can get pretty skanky at times. It really depends though, because there's always those people who aren't promiscuous at all and only date one person their entire time in college, etc.

Most schools in Boston would make you feel very welcome. I go to Boston University and see many gay people, some open and some very quiet about their sexual orientation. However, none are made to feel any different from anyone else. in fact, Boston has a quite a large gay population relative to many other cities. Clubs usually have a specific gay night, and there are a few student clubs to give gay and lesbian students a place to meet and discuss their feelings. You can't go wrong with a Boston-area school, or a California liberal-minded school as mentioned earlier.

I visited GW and noticed a very significant, welcomed gay population there.

american colleges are traditionally very liberal from a social point of view, or at least tolerant. to make a HUGE generalization, i would say that small liberal arts colleges are going to be the most open, followed by secular private universities, followed by southern schools and schools with a large religious population. however unless you're going to BJU you're probably not going to encounter a huge amount of prejudice.

well state schools in california and the northeast will generally be open to homosexuality.

i dont think most gay students are any more promiscous than the straight ones. a few stand out, but most are just like anyone else.

I think any school closer to a cosmoplitan area like California, Miami or NYC would be more accepting. See if you can get information on how active their gay/lesbian clubs are.

And now to start off the madness....

"What do lesbian [insert race] think of Asian lesbians?"

Schools in/near major cities and in California and the northeast will be most open. What kind of school do you want to go to? Check into the GLBT scenes at specific schools you're interested in.

As for promiscuoity, there are people with all kinds of philosophies on it. As you know it's more accepted here, but you can do or not do whatever you want.

i would advise you to avoid chicago schools...

DEFINETLY look at NYU. a lot of kids go there from my high school and they say about 1/3 of the guys you meet are gay. its welcomed and accepted there and i think youd get that at almost any city school. and i agree, the northeast/california would provide you with a lot of good choices
