Gay life and Fordham?

I'm very excited about going to Fordham in the fall. Still, I am a little curious about social life on campus, which I cannot seem to find all that much good information about.

This may have been discussed already (sorry if it has), but I'm a little worried about diversity on campus in regards to sexual orientation, because basically I have heard that people can be pretty conservative, despite hearing insistence that is it also very liberal. As a pretty open person myself, I'm concerned that I won't be surrounded by people who are as open to what seems the only minority group discriminated against left in America: the gays.

I'd love any info you guys are sporting!

i'd like more info on this too, since i'm a homo =)

I answered this earlier, guess my post didn't go through?

Anyway, there's a pretty large gay community at Fordham (at LC, at least.)
I'd say a 1/4 or so of students are gay.
You'll both be fine.

Do you go to fordham plasttsburgh? There is a good amount of gay people I'd say but definitely not 1/4..There's also a club called the pride alliance for homosexuals and heterosexuals alike which does special events etc

Apparently so. Haven't done a survey recently, however.

Anyway, stephennn and betty, you'll be fine.
Most of my friends are gay, I don't think they've had any problems.
GL.

I tend to agree with KC. There is a small but visible population of gays. This has existed since the 1980s, when their student organization was known as FLAG (Fordham Lesbians and Gays). I do not remember any incidents of discrimination. Although I do remember a guerilla marketing campaign that was conducted by Fordham Republicans for the 1984 presidential election. They plastered the campus with posters that appeared to originate from FLAG, that stated that FLAG supported Mondale for president. This marketing campaign had no real effect on the election. The election was a run away for Reagan, but it was still a slick use of reverse psychology.

Never thought i'd see the day people want to go to a college based on if they have alot homos or not.

If you are on Facebook, there is a group for accepted students, Fordham 2013, if you go on there and look at the profiles of the kids already accepted, you will see this discussed. It does appear that Fordham LC is a very open and accepting campus, there will be diversity of gay and straight students, and even though Fordham is a Jesuit University, the posts by current Fordham students indicates that it is not necessarily an uber-conservative environment. To the contrary, it appears that there is a pretty good mix of liberal and conservative, gay and straight, and they all seem to coexist very amicably.

there's definitely gay students on both campuses (and clubs for them as well). LC I think has more gay students (it's a bit more liberal from what I hear and that's where most of the programs dealing with the arts are situated). i'm at rose hill and haven't seen any discrimination toward any group of people. you should be fine.

that actually isn't at all what the OP (and myself) wanted to know

i don't know if you meant for your comment to sound homophobic, but that is kind of how i took it. i just don't want you to twist what the OP said - we wanted to know if the college was accepting, not if a lot of gay people went there.

Thanks everyone.

Mostly I just wanted to be reassured that I would be able to meet a whole bunch of people from different backgrounds. My high school has little to no diversity, and I feel pretty uncultured. I had already heard that the campus is pretty diverse ethnically (as colleges go) and hoped that it was diverse in other ways as well. Anyway, Fordham is my top choice regardless.

Again, thanks for the responses. I feel better.

I think this thread is funny so i'll throw im my 2 cents. I'd assume that LC is both very liberal. I'd also say that there is probably a greater gay population at LC. It's interesting that this concerns you. I wouldn't worry to much, I mean it is New York after all.

I’m curious about this, too. I’m gay and might very well might be at Fordham fall 2010. Anyone have any observations on gay life at Rose Hill specifically? That’s where I got in.

*might very well be at Fordham fall 2010.

And, not to be blunt necessarily, but is there any shortage of gay students at Rose Hill? Acceptance is lovely–I also don’t want to be stranded.

Lol I agree with Sebab…Fordhams my number one choice, so I’ll be going there if I can find a way to pay for it…and it would suck to be like the only gay chick hahaha

Def more gay population in LC, as it is more liberal of the two. RH is a bit more conservative but most of the students are accepting. It is NY after all, so diversity should not be much of a concern. I think it is more important to choose the school based on an academic fit, because anywhere you go, you’ll find the right people to hang out with that share the same interests as you.
