Gay life at Umich

Hi
I'm an Asian male student entering Umich Engineering this fall.
I would like to know how the atmosphere for gay students is at Umich?

Thanks.

hm i dont know much about gay/lesbian activities, but there’s this organization on campus called SAGE(student alliance of gay engineers?) or something like, im sure u’ll find some organization to fit in

I read somewhere that Michigan elected their first openly gay student president. If an openly gay person can get elected student president, I think you will be fine.

There was an article in the Daily about gay people in fraternities – sometimes they are open to only their friends, sometimes to the whole house, sometimes to the whole greek community/campus, so it looks like they have a pretty good experience on average. So that happens too.

ann arbor is a superliberal city

I would imagine that the gay atmosphere at Michigan is anything but hostile. Michigan is one of the more liberal public schools, keep in mind.

Like others have said, Ann Arbor is a very liberal and accepting town. Since UMich is such a big school, you’ll no doubt run into some homophobes, but I haven’t run into any in my first year here.

There are LGBT organizations that you can get involved in, and there are quite a few events for LGBT students as well (there was a Pride Week a few weeks ago). If you’re looking for a club scene, Necto hosts Gay Night on Friday nights.
