Gay life?

18--From Vermont--Incoming Fresh Undergrad

I know this question has been asked before but not for several years. Over the years students and environments can change so I'm wondering...

What it's like for gay students?

I know there's a gay office and stuff but how do gay people meet other gay people here? Events? Activities? Clubs?

How are gay people treated here?

I'm still waiting on my acceptance and might decide to come here so I want some insider info on gay life. As much info as you have would be appreciated.

I really don’t know too much, but there are 3 gay boys on my daughters floor and judging from the pictures I see on her Facebook page, they are accepted and included. Two are roommates and 1 rooms with a straight guy. She talks about them since they are all friends of hers now and she’s never said anything about negative behavior from anyone else. I would think you could find a link on the PSU website to some clubs and they usually have emails. You could submit questions you directly to them.

Good luck!

I’ve already committed but am wondering the same thing. If anyone has any personal experiences to share that’d be great.

The Advocate awarded Penn State a 20 out of 20 “Gay Point Average.” There is a LGBTA Resource Center on campus near the HUB (student union bldg) with several active social and political student activity groups, that also serves as a place to just hang out. There is a gay bar downtown, which has some under-21 nights, too. There are Nat’l Coming Out Week events in the fall and extensive Pride Week events in the spring, usually culminating in a well-attended professional drag show. Kate Clinton performed last week, Chaz Bono spoke in the fall. One may encounter occasional drunken verbal harassment downtown on weekends, but I think most LGBT students feel safe and included. There is such a tremendous number and variety of activities available to Penn state students, including sports, performing arts, philanthropy, politics, etc. that if you choose to become active outside the classroom you are bound to meet all kinds of people.
